Anyone install aftermarket Nav unit?

We have an edge with the MyFord touch and even though it can be slow to respond, I absolutely love the 8" screen. We are contemplating getting a new Grand Cherokee or Durango as well but I just can't get over the 6.5" screen. Has anyone added an aftermarket 7" screen to their WK2 or Durango? If so, do you have pictures and comments as to how well it works in regards to steering wheel controls, navigation, bluetooth and such?

Re: Anyone install aftermarket Nav unit?

To find out which double-din headunits fit the 2011+ GC & Durango, go to Crutchfield.com and use their Outfit My Car tool to find out what fits.

You will also need a PAC Audio radio replacement interface to connect the Jeep harness to the headunit. You will also need a PAC Audio steering wheel interface to keep the steering wheel controls.

I'm in the process of upgrading the stock radio in my 2011 GC with an aftermarket double-din media receiver. I'll have a how-to written up in a few weeks.

Re: Anyone install aftermarket Nav unit?

You will have to check with stereo review sites for opinions on head units. The Kenwoods come with Garmin Nav and have great reviews, except they can be slow.

If you plan to do this, get as base a radio as possible, as aftermarket radios have proprietary antenna, microphone, camera interfaces. You will probably have to replace those with the radio vendor stuff (these are basically designed for radio upgrades, not to replace high end OEM equipment).

It is not for the feint of heart, you need at lease two adapters, a can bus and another to convert wheel controls, an be willing to ream out a bit of the plastic under the dash.

The guys at Crutchfield walked me though the process, and it ended up making no sense. The current 730N and 430N are pretty good radios after all. You'd be spending close to $2000 for a replacement head unit with near the same function.

I've also heard that many large screen heads just don't look right in the JGC dash, almost "trailer park" style.

You'll probably have to wait till the next interior make over to have a dash that accepts larger screens with style.

Now if you are a function over form kind of guy, then you won't mind....

Re: Anyone install aftermarket Nav unit?

i installed my x930bt system into my GC. its a 6.5 inch screen but it looks good in the car. XM radio, Bluetooth for phone and audio, steering wheel controls. Works great and with the option to choose the illumination color it looks factory.

I'm looking at upgrading my headunit in my 2013 grand cherokee. I have the standard 430 with bluetooth and uconnect on the steering wheel. Did you keep factory bluetooth microphone with your x930bt install or did you have to install an aftermarket mic? I want to keep all steering wheel controls which I beleive I can do with the appropriate PAC wiring harnesses with the exception of the Uconnect, which is fine with me since that functionality isn't that great anyway.

You lose Uconnect if you go with an aftermarket headunit.

With regards to the steering wheel controls, those will work if you use the PAC RP4-CH11 adapter. This adapter will also interface the headunit with Jeep's Can bus electrical architecture. It's a must!

Re: Anyone install aftermarket Nav unit?

Thanks for the input. I decided to forego the headunit and do 6.5 JL c2650 components front and rear with an lc7i and rockford fosgate pbr300x4 amp. I'm starting the install now but I'm having trouble tracing speaker wires. The speaker wire colors coming out of the headunit do not match those at the speakers. (some match, but not all). I'm thinking that there might be a crossover or even an amp hidden that I'm not aware of. It's a 2013 laredo e. Any thoughts? Ultimately, I'm wondering where to tap speaker levels for the LOC and whether I have factory passive or active crossovers.

Re: Anyone install aftermarket Nav unit?

Does it have the Alpine 9 speaker system or the base 6 speaker system?

Re: Anyone install aftermarket Nav unit?

If you're bothering to upgrade the speakers and install an aftermarket amp, then don't use the small OEM wiring. If you're going new, go all new.

I ran all new, 14 gauge, wire to each door. It's a pain in the you know what, but highly recommended. The wires go to the amp, RCA cables from the amp to the headunit. Voila!

Tools I highly recommend, heck you can't do it without these:

-Multimeter
-Trim removal tool (Like this)
-Door panel removal tool (like this)
-Wire grabber/puller (like this)
-Wire stripper
-Pliers
-Heatshrink
-Soldering kit
-Dielectric grease
