Yes, the only reason that Android is taking over more market share is because they're selling more phones. Thank you for pointing this out.
And furthermore, if Apple moved to your idea and licensed their OS out, it would not be appealing to people, because the whole "ideal" of Apple products is that they just work, they don't have compatibility issues because there's only one set of hardware out there for them. Licensing their OS out would do them no good, because they'd end up with the massive amount of work to be compatible with lots of devices that Google faces, and lose their snob appeal to the people who feel that Apple devices are better because they cost more.
I don't think it's smart to base compatibility off of something switched out so often. I get a new cell phone every 2-3 years. I try to make vehicles last 5+ years. When my last car was new, the iPhone wasn't even out yet, but now that I've bought my Jeep there's a plethora of smartphones of different types. In a few years wen I buy my next vehicle, I think it's highly unlikely what we consider to be normal is going to be the norm, and so basing your infotainment system in a vehicle off of something that may well be outdated in 3-4 years is IMO foolish and short sighted.
How stupid would you look if you bought a nice used car that supported an iPhone 5 years from now, when everyone else was using augmented reality glasses? How stupid would a company look if they were to invest millions into supporting a minority stake holder of a market that no longer exists?
Seriously, this sort of move is akin to if they had invested heavily in putting MiniDisc players in their vehicles in the 90s. Or those giant LaserDiscs.
In a big purchase like a vehicle, flexibility and adaptibility are good things.
