Audio Suggestions

Yes, I know there are a million threads about switching out speakers, however, the prices I see are just different everywhere I go. I've never switched out speakers on my car because I've never really kept a car longer than a year or two. But now that I really think I can see myself driving the Jeep for a long time, I'm deciding to purchase on a full audio overhaul.

First, I'm going with the JL Stealthbox for the new sub, prices I've seen have been no less than $650, however, I saw someone get it for $525 but had no link. Was wondering if that's true.

Second, for speakers, I don't know which company to look for, I was contemplating Boston Acoustic, but I saw speakers I was eyeing for my Mitsubishi Evolution, Infiniti Kappa's and am aiming at those. Was wondering if anyone had any input.

Third, tweeters, no idea where to start.

Lastly, amp, same boat as with tweeters. That's my main reason of posting. I'm looking to order and hopefully have them installed as soon as possible. Thanks guys

JL makes good stuff. I haven't heard the GC version, but I have owned two others and they work as well if not better than any other non-custom product. JL's amps would be a pretty good way to go as well. If you are going to replace all of the speakers, figure out how many "channels" you'll need. For practical reasons treat each tweeter-midrange combo as 1 channel.

Most speakers are going to be either separates (separate woofer and tweeter with a crossover) or coaxial (woofer and tweeter married together). You should have to figure out tweeters separately from other door speakers. Bostons used to be the top out there in the 90's. I don't know if they are anything more than just expensive these days. I haven't heard their stuff in quite a while. That said I know there is lots of competition today that they didn't have in the 90's. Focal, JL, probably a ton of others. Check around.

There will be three main things to think about.
1. How to get an audio signal from the head unit to your amp, and how to deal with the fader/balance issues.
2. Amps channels, and how to feed the signal route to the speakers you get installed. Combined with how to deal with the turn on/off and power the amp/amps.
3. Where do these extra items go in the vehicle.

I'm not trying to go crazy with anything, just looking to upgrade what I have as clean as possible. Would I look to treat the front two speakers as one channel along with treating the back two speakers as one channel as well?

Re: Audio Suggestions

I can't speak for the speakers, but with regards to hooking up an aftermarket amp to the stock Jeep radio, then check out PAC Audio adapters. They have one that gives you RCA outputs so you can use an aftermarket amp with the stock Jeep radio.

Also, crutchfield.com is the place to start. Punch in what vehicle you have and it tells you everything you need to know about upgrading the audio & video in your vehicle.

Nope. Stereo has 2 channels. Right and Left. A car typically has 4 channels. Right and left both front and back. The stock Jeep has many channels. I think the stock system treats the driver door as two channels, one for the woofer and one for the tweeter. The stock amp in the Jeep has the crossover built in to smoothly blend the frequencies between these two speakers sending highs to the tweeter and lows to the woofer. This is mirrored both front and back, and left and right, along with a center channel up front and a channel for the subwoofer. Quick look at Jeep.com says 4 or 9 channels depending on the system.

Now you could (and there are a number of reasons I would advise against it) treat the front left and rear left as one channel. A minimal higher-end system will have three channels. Front left, Front right, and a subwoofer. Doing four doors for a lean and clean system should be a 5 channels system. Front and rear right and left with sub. This can be accomplished with 1 five channel amp. An example is this JL unit. Although it's a bit on the pricy side, it will take what the factory amp puts out (speaker level) without any additional products and sound great doing it. Without this kind of feature built in, you have to resort to a speaker to line level converter in addition to an amp. This one from JL is above and beyond as well, but works well. Both these examples can be had for a lot less money, but JL makes very nice high quality stuff.

I want to be clear, there are much less expensive products that do very much the same things as the JL stuff I listed here.

Hope that helps.

Greetings,

I am patiently waiting to upgrade my complete Alpine Premium Sound System as well.

For the front speakers I already started to purchase components for a 3-way system. In your case a good 2-way system would be the best thing with out spending a ton money. Massive Audio has a 6x9 component system using a European 28 mm silk tweeter (the CK69x). From what I have read the Crossover next work is excellent, which is a major factor for clean sound. Also check out Morel Hifi and Boston Acoustics, their mid lines are very good. Just remember, with the current Amp in the GC with any replacement speaker company, you will not get the full benefit simply because of the Amp's design.

The rear speakers I am keeping to a 2-way component system with mid woofer in the door and the tweeter in the back pillar were two small full range speakers are currently located. This is will be my rear fill-in. I would stay with the same company for the rear speakers.

The JL sub is the best way to go for now. A custom sub enclosure will run you more money and a strong Amp whereas the JL audio sub any decent Class D amp will pump that bad-boy.

With Hi-Speed can bus the GC uses, I am waiting to see the 2012 Kenwood HeadUnits that will soon be out. They are using a new integration system that will tied into the GC UnConnect system later this summer or fall. This will make my life easier.

For this GC, I would differently go to good car installer in your area. Get quotes so that you can do this in phases.

Best for now.

@Ashton Thank you, I've already been getting quotes and everything, this stuff isn't cheap lol. Have you started to look as well into swapping out the audio components in the Jeep?

@1stJeepGC I went to the nearest dukes and the price they gave me seemed crazy. 1 5 channel Alpine amp, 4 speakers, 2 tweeters, installed $1400

Hello,

I would compare the prices with Crutchfield by figuring the material cost by comparing products. The difference will be the install cost. It sounds to me they want to put in a one Step up Alpine system with component for the front and a coaxial for the rear door.

I would also check out Best Buy. They have a good install program and they install product that was not purchased in Best Buy.

Best for now.

What seems a reasonable price for a full install? I'm looking to bring my parts purchased from crutchfield and bring them to my installer.

I'd love to tell ya, but I've been out of that game for too long. Have no idea what it would cost today.

Greetings,

In my area, Amp and the speakers would between $500.00 - $750.00 plus any other install components. You can use Best Buy as guide.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Car-GPS-...at143000050016

Hope this helps.
