Audio system confusion

Pretty basic questions but it's not that clear on the jeep.com site in building a WK2 or in test driving.

What is the standard stereo vs the steror with amp option? What is it that actually gets you the Alpine stereo option I see mentioned? I don't see that on the website. What is it that comes in a Limited with the 8.4 N system and/or the Lux II option package?

Another question: How is the Alpine system vs the standard system? I won't ask about the HK system as I won't order that. I'm mostly looking at a Limited with some options. How does it compare to the old WJ Infinity Gold system ( I have this now for a long time and have been satisfied for the most part).

Thanks.

Re: Audio system confusion

Greetings,

In regards to the Alpine system, it depends upon your personal level of sound quality. If you are an audiophile, then for sure you will not like it. Here in the forum this topic is evenly split. Some like it and some hate it. For those who hate it, their are many posts regarding upgrades.

IMHo, the Alpine system should have been the caliber of the HK system minus the Logic 7 of course since that is proprietary of HK. I would for sure test listen to the Alpine system in order to determine it meets your needs.

Best for now.

Re: Audio system confusion

the limited with 8.4n will have the alpine 9 speaker system. Im pretty sure ANY 8.4n on ANY trim level will have the amp.

As far as the infinity gold comparison. it is BETTER. The alpine system is decent system. The major limitation is its overall volume. if you like it loud, you will hate the alpine. Not only because it doesnt get very loud, but because it is difficutl and expensive to intergrate to. you cant simply replace the speakers to make it better, the amp controls everyting, and must be retained. This forces you to get a summing unit, and an aftermarket amp and aftermarket speakers if you want it louder or more clear. AKA be prepaired to pay extra for tha alpine, and if you dont like it, expect 2000 more in an aftermarket shop. Thanks Jeep for using CAN-BUS control between the fac radio and amp.

is it better than the infinity gold, YES.Is it the same quality you would get if you had aftermarket alpine, absolutely NO.

A lot of posters here would disagree with this statement. I have just completed changing the front doors and the rear door speakers with Infinity Primus speakers which are the bottom grade speakers from Infinity (compared to Kappas or Reference) and you can definitely notice a difference. I haven't done the center channel or the subwoofer (yet) but a lot of posters here have done the Focal upgrades and are very happy with it. As a fairly cheap investment, changing the speakers may be enough for some people.

ok I agree with you, I worded it poorly. The factory amplifier controls what frequencies go to what speakers. so by purchasing a $400 set of speakers to replace your front 6x9 (front doors) is not going to yield the results you are looking for. you can put a $5 speaker or a $500 speaker in the front doors and you will still only hear the same fequencies that the factory speaker produced. Which is Mid bass only, of approx in the band of 90hz to 300hz. Meaning most of the SQ (sound quality) that goes into a speakers design is based off not having a "gap" in frequencies, while also making sure there is good reproductions. so a $200 set of 6x9 is going to have a decent amount off produciton cost specifically for the tweeter. In an GC with alpine or HK, that tweeter will NOT produce any sound, because the factory amp is stopping all tweeter frequencies from going to that 6x9.

My point was, don't expect that $400 set of Focal to sound as good as it does on the showroom floor. will t sould better, yes, but you are essentiall spending money on parts of a speaker you will not even use.
consider it like buying 4 tires for your car, and 2 of them are the wrong size.

Yes, I agree with what you're saying... that makes sense. Damn Chrysler, they really could have put a bit more thought and money into this stereo system and it wouldn't have cost that much more to have some very good decent sound.

Greetings,

Well said.

For a couple of years now, I have always recommended if you are not going for the large makeover, the 2 best things were to change out the headunit and the speakers. Remember, a lot of people perceive sound differently than others. As for the headunit, when FCA switched over to the new Uconnect's, that option is no longer available at the present time.

The Alpine system is just plain basic, IMHO, as have said over the years, it is really not a true premium system. However, for many it is fine and that is what FCA was after. It is just a basic 7.1 surround sound quality system and it was never designed for the loud SPL systems to crank on. Just look at the OE speaker magnets and feel the weight.

Best for now.
