Beep Beep?

Hey guys

Picked up my '14 Overland on Friday, drove her all the way from Sydney to Adelaide, and today have been out and about with the family.

Every so often I keep hearing a "beep beep" sound. There are no warnings on the dash, no icons, no nothing.

It is a lower pitched beep than the Blind Sport Monitoring alert.

I thought it was alerts for speed cameras at first, but doesn't seem to always correspond. Then I thought it was speed change alert - I was hearing it constantly within the suburbs of Sydney but out on the country road I only heard it upon approach of a town. Now in Adelaide I have heard it go off twice - once was (very far away from) a fixed speed camera, but then I went through another fixed speed camera and there was no warning and another time I started beeping for no reason. Plenty of speed limit changes and no beeps.

Cannot for the life of me work out what the beeping is for and it's starting to get annoying - hoping someone can advise what it could be.

I had this after playing with the NAV system.

The NAV system is alerting you to SCHOOL ZONES

OMG thank you so much - thinking back over the squillions of times it went off in Sydney, each time it went off in country towns, and the couple of times it has done it in Adelaide that is spot on... I can vividly remember 1) There would have been a school in each and every case, and 2) I turned on school indicators in the nav settings because I thought it would be nice to see on the map since they represent a speed restriction.

Never occurred to me in all the times I have gone back over all the settings or reading through the manual that it was responsible for those beeps.

Thank you again ChuckBruce

Re: Beep Beep?

Does it work that way in the USA too? I will have to check. I don't recall a setting for school zones, and my system doesn't beep like the OP's.

Re: Beep Beep?

No worries, Tillsy!

@echo7tango - I don't know if USA has special speed limits, at certain times of the day, for schools?

Re: Beep Beep?

There was a short period of time where I was getting a sound almost like trumpets...after some sleuthing, I discovered that something got set to "chime" every time I passed...a cemetery. Oy! Needless to say...I turned that off.

Re: Beep Beep?

Alrighty we were out for a big drive today and twice I started getting the "beep beep", counting down on approach to something.

Sure enough, there was indeed a school in both cases.

Switched over to the nav screen and yep, there were school icons showing.

Yet, I have turned off ALL points of interest. Amongst which I can not find a "School zone" setting. I swear I did see such a setting when I was originally configuring things.

So it is definitely doing a "beep beep" for school zones, it is definitely showing the school zones on screen, but I can't find where I set it?

Re: Beep Beep?

Probably gets set with the COMMUNITY category under the ALL setting.

Re: Beep Beep?

Couldn't find a community setting, so I simply turned off everything - TMC outright off, all POI, every single detail setting, etc.

The beeps still occur - sometimes for speed cameras, sometimes for no reason at all.

What is more interesting, however, is with everything off including railways and traffic issues - I still see railways being highlighted, school zones, etc. No matter how many times I reconfirm those settings are off they are still be shown onscreen. Which might explain why it also still beeps for them? Albeit the beeping is sometimes while approaching nothing.

Very baffling.

Re: Beep Beep?

Finally found a post describing this same issue and Starion_VR4 comes to the same conclusion as ChuckBruce - that it is triggering of school zones, but in his case (and obviously mine) has manifested to be any kind of speed related matter.

Have checked and I have the latest firmware. Does seem to be a bit buggy though as, per above, I am still seeing symbols for items I have turned off.

I wonder if there is a way to do a full reset of all settings back to default so I can see if it clears.

Alternatively what about the TMS data - I notice only a particular radio station here in Adelaide is listed as broadcasting it, but I only had it on that station the day I drove her back into the state... ever since it has been on another station. Could it be holding onto old data?

I ask because I am seeing a lot of traffic accidents, which again I've turned off but am still seeing, at locations where clearly there are no accidents. Last night we drove through three such incidents for example.

Might put it onto that station tomorrow night and see if she updates her stats.

Apologies for not seeing this sooner, ChuckBruce. In the USA, at least in California, what I have noticed is that the speed limit in a school zone is 25 MPH when children are present - that is the key phrase because if, for example, on a summer evening when school is not in session but if there are children playing in the school yard, I believe one could be ticketed if going over 25. Alternately, if it's a school day and all the school children are indoors and not obviously visible, you might be okay exceeding 25.

I am not certain of these but I take a 'better safe than sorry' approach.

I have also seen some small towns in California and in other western states where, when school is in session and the 25 MPH limit is enforced, there are flashing yellow lights with the SCHOOL ZONE 25 MPH sign - when the lights are flashing (typically on a school day during school hours) then the limit is enforced, and when the lights are not flashing and still the signs say this I notice the locals zooming past at 30 or 35+. So, not enforceable? Who knows?

I'm sure there is a legal interpretation to these situations but I'm not an expert. It can be aggravating. There are likely standard laws in each state, but there can also be exceptions for towns or counties.

(sigh)
