Bumper Cam DVR?

I've been looking at the idea of getting some sort of dash cam, but I really would prefer to use permanently installed exterior cameras (like the rear view camera) for the task. That way, I won't have to remove or hide the dash cam to get rid of the temptation someone might have to break in and steal it (or them).

I'd hate to end up with a broken window over a $150-$200 camera.

What I'm wondering is if anyone knows of any suitable standalone recorders that could be used with external bumper cams. I've found a few, but the reviews often vary a lot and the quality is not always great.

Since it's unlikely the cameras will be HD (most backup-type cameras are not), I'm not worried about have HD recording. I just want the best quality to preserve the source material.

Finally, whatever the device, it needs to be able to record upon vehicle start up without me having to manually do anything.

Any thoughts?

As an alternative, I wouldn't mind an "all-in-one" dash cam if it's small enough to go unnoticed from outside the vehicle and it won't block my view. In other words, if it could sit on the windshield behind the rear view mirror and blend in with it, I'd consider that option.

The problem is, too many are way too large and have various brushed metal accents on them that make them easily seen. Plus, I'm not as keen on windshield mounts in the first place. Something that could clamp to the back side of the rear view mirror would actually be just about right.
