Re: Carplay

Greetings,

On the aftermarket front, their are now 2 manufacture that are suppling CarPlay units.

Alpine has release the preliminary details on their 1st unit, iLX-007. Alpine should be releasing more units in the near future.

Alpine Electronics of America, Inc.

Now with 2 manufactures in competition for the CarPlay market, maybe the 3rd party apps will roll out in the forth coming months.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Still nothing new on the OE side and I do not think that anything this year. I my gut feeling is that Chrysler wants to protect uConnect as much as possible for them to get their investment back before a majority of drivers switch over to CarPlay or Google OAA. If this is the case, then I hope in the forthcoming models they bring the processors and screen display up to standards. i.e.: Volvo XC90.

My long cry out for the 3rd party navi apps is not here yet. I am waiting for Sygic to respond to my inquiry. The new version for both platforms has really improved, IMHO, it is better than IGO Primo. I never had the Garmin App so I can not make any reference to it.

So far, with CarPlay's 3rd party apps out: Spotify, iHeartRadio, Rdio, Stitcher and now CBSRadio. That is 5 out of the 6 now available with MLB on deck. From the rumor mill Beats Music will integrate into iTunes Radio or iTunes Radio to be renamed to compete against Spotify.

My feeling for future 3rd party apps for CarPlay won't come until sometime early next year when the developers will analyze the market between car manufactures releasing CarPlay on their model and the aftermarket headunit sales.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

From MacWorld Podcast, here is a comparison between the Pioneer and Alpine units that the interviewed described from using both of them. This is the first review I found that give me a better insight into the Alpine unit. It starts 12 minutes into the podcast for about 10 minutes.

Here in my car: Ewww-ber and Alpine's CarPlay plans | Macworld

This should be a very interesting CES for 2015. I hoping that Alpine will release future information on new CarPlay units and the next round of upgrades on the Pioneer's NEX units. For sure the processing power in these head units are up to today's standards, now I hope they work on the screens.

The following article from MacWorld deals with a user that used the top of line NEX 8000 radio with CarPlay over a period of 72 hours.

72 hours with CarPlay: Test-driving the Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX | Macworld

It looks like the majority of the music and podcast apps are updated for CarPlay. Aupeo, which I like will not make a decision until the 2nd quarter of 2015 and I am not sure about Tune-in. The navi apps for both online and offline are still in a holding pattern as in nobody knows. It would be nice for a great weather app for CarPlay. The new version of CommuteWX for AppRadio is pretty nice.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Now that Apple released the official MFI spec for CarPlay head units, I do not think that the current uConnect HU's will work unless they have the chip already installed. The following quote is from 9to5:

"Apple will have all of its CarPlay hardware go through the MFi program, which means the product will require an authentication chip that aims to prevent unofficial products from offering the CarPlay feature."

My feeling is the 2014 units are no go and depending on the 2015 unit maybe in the late builds. Maybe one of the super specialist here at jeepgarge.org has some sort of insight to this.

Here is the full link to article and the post commentary to the article:

Re: Carplay

Greetings and Happy New Year To All,

For the aftermarket folks out their, a 3rd manufacture is ready to announce at the CES 2015 another unit for CarPlay and for Android Auto. Check out the video:

AppRadioWorld: Parrot Joins The Field With The RNB6 Offering CarPlay And Android Auto [CES 2015]

Parrot's other aftermarket unit was in fact a sleeper. From preliminary specs, this one looks pretty good. With 3 aftermarket HU going to be on the market and 2 other car manufactures going online with their versions late into 2015, more apps should now be forth coming for CarPlay. And at the same token, it should push CarPlay's competitor as well.

As for those that have the current Uconnect systems, it would be nice if Jeep would tell us their intentions.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

For the aftermarket folks:

Kenwood announced today their CarPlay and Android 1st headunit. Pricing and details to follow:

Kenwood Debuts The DDX9902S In-Car Multimedia Center With Android Auto And Apple CarPlay

Pioneer announced the 2nd generation of Nex units that will also be Android ready.

So we now have 4 aftermarket manufactures that are producing CarPlay units. 2 are on the shelf now and 2 more coming down the road. Hopefully this means that more 3rd party apps are on their way like navi?

For the Factory radio folks:

I have not read anything yet about an interface with the 2014+ units. Right now the best way is to get one of the Lockpicks and mirror your smartphone.

Best for now.

Greetings,

The Parrot looks interesting. If that is truly an HD screen as oppose to the standard RGB of yesteryear, then you are going to get the smartphone or tablet experience that you should be getting with today's technology.

Best for now.

Greetings,

From early reports on other forums, the HD screen shown at CES 2015 is a European preliminary model that is supposed to be 720p. If that is true, then say good bye to RGB screens. A few of the car manufactures at last spring's New York Auto show were display HD screens as part of their packages. Volvo's XC-90, Tesla and some other have the HD screens coming out.

Parrot may have caught the entire aftermarket headunit industry off-guard this year. I hope this unit is not vaporware because this would be the upgrade from my current AppRadio 3.

Best for now.

Edit: Finally found a video, looks like this going to be reality for both CarPlay and Android:

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

OE SIDE:

With FCA still owning a majority of the shares in Ferrari even after the public offering announced at the end of October 2014, CarPlay still has not come to the FCA fleet. I find this interesting since one the current board of directors for Ferrari is Apple's Senior V.P. Eddy Cue. Strange that he did not try to tap into FCA to push CarPlay. Then again maybe he did and FCA wants to push Uconnect.

As the season's auto shows advance, still no word when CarPlay will reach the Jeep's. Maybe at this year's NYIAS which will occur in slightly more than a month from now.

AFTERMARKET SIDE:

Kenwood's units are due sometime late in the spring or early summer. Their will be an Execlon version as well. This will be the first unit that will have the better sound quality. The top of the line Pioneer is close, but the Kenwood Excelon in all this years has always shined. I am surprised that Alpine did not come out with another unit. Alpine's top line always has excellent audio quality.

As for the Parrot model, still no word on a release date. This unit has the better screen as in 720p HD. With the car manufactures slowly and steadily pushing HD screens this year again and more next year, will the aftermarket industry respond for the challenge as did Parrot? After all, with the HD screen it brings back to your smartphone and tablet experience.

APP SIDE:

Last fall saw the initial release of CarPlay's app from both Apple & the 3rd party developers. These were mostly on the music and podcast side. Still nothing on navi apps for both on-line (Waze, MotionX, etc...) and off-line (Sygic, IGO Primo,TomTom, Garmin....). Weather apps would be nice and other popular POI apps. With now 2 aftermarket head units on the shelf and 2 more coming shortly, the tempo would pickup. A lot has to do with requirements that Apple has laid down that programmers have adapt too.

As for me, it still going to be a waiting game. The HD screen is now important so hope the Parrot unit will be excellent in audio quality as well. So, I am still stuck with the Pioneer AppRadio 3.

Best for now.
