Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Yep, I saw that.

The car manufactures have made a huge investment into the headunits and until they to have collect their return, thus they will not introduce any competition into their vehicles. Which is why every year more and more vehicles can not accommodate an aftermarket HU. Thus the integration aftermarket has taken over sales of HU aftermarket.

Whether or not if CarPlay or Android Auto is superior to the OEM system does not matter to them. It is what they believe in should happen and not let the so called outsiders dedicate policy or control the market.

For CarPlay and Android Auto to success will have to come form the aftermarket headunits. And for that, the need for the 3rd party apps. Which will require rethinking of the restrictions to lure in the developers. Otherwise this could be vaporware and will we back to the tablet scenario.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Here is today's announcement from Apple on CarPlay:

Apple's CarPlay supported by all 'major' manufacturers, coming to 40 new car models this year

How about Jeep? Good question. I guess the answer is TBD, To Be Determined.

Slow adaption is understatement. The only good out of this might be some incentive for the 3rd party developers to kick in. On the flipped side, the developers have to meet the standards set forth by Apple and that might not be that easy in certain apps. Sygic already indicated that Apple has to work with to relax the standards a little.

Oh well, as the sage continues.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Here is an interesting commentary about CarPlay & Android Auto:

Apple Inc drives CarPlay adoption deep into the auto industry, including China [u]

I am wondering what is up Apple's sleeve for this coming WWC in June.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Here we go, wireless CarPlay now with IOS 8.3:

Apple's iOS 8.3 update brings wireless CarPlay to your iPhone

So can you can get wireless connection on supporting vehicles. Last time I looked, nothing for Jeep yet or on the current aftermarket units.

Here is interesting article from our friends in Aussie:

Google’s Android Auto, Apple’s CarPlay and the battle for the connected car

It is interesting on the facts reviled from the study. With Apple & Google dug in with their concepts, 3rd party navi apps is going to be a wait unless there is some comprises going to happen.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

The music App Tunein has now joined the list for CarPlay. CarPlay now has pretty much all the major music apps ready to go with Beats sometime down the road with the new iTunes UI. I sent Aupeo another inquiry regarding a time table on their entry.

TuneIn Radio adds real radio stations to CarPlay + Apple Watch controls | 9to5Mac

Apple has added more countries that now can access CarPlay. Hopefully, that would encourage developers to look into the system. Any major news might come this June at the Apple WWDC which is just weeks away. Maybe we can get more information about the wireless connection. It would be nice if that connections allows you to do mirroring on a supporting device. At least I could use my Sgyic Navi App.

As for the OE front, I have heard absolute nothing about when Jeep will have CarPlay available or if their is way to retro fit it.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

On the OE Side:

Wakie, Wakie FCA. Your next door neighbor was not sleeping.

Ford details CarPlay integration with SYNC infotainment system

Wow, I know FCA has a lot of things to think about and problems to solve. How about a response please.

Personally, as I have been posting, until a I see 3rd party apps for navi, I will wait. In meantime, I will make due with my Pioneer AppRadio.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

I don't understand why Car manufacturers are dragging their feet with Android Auto or Carplay. Phones are more popular than ever and it would make more sense to make the systems in cars mimick our phones as much as possible.

Has there been any recent updates for Android Auto since this Chrysler Group Models Getting Android Auto OS by End of Year | AutoNation Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM Southwest? I have the 8.4AN unit in my '14 Altitude and have not paid the $500 for the Nav upgrade. Android Auto would be very nice to use rather than paying that extar money.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

I have not heard anything yet about when FCA is going to implement Android Auto or CarPlay. For current models, I am not sure if they are geared for it, nor do I think that Uconnect is going to have an update either.

The car manufactures are the ones that actual started the Infotainment category in rude form. Then, the aftermarket world picked it up with Pioneer (which I am currently running with) at the forefront. Then Apple jump in and Google followed. At the same time the car manufactures have poured lots of money into improving their systems.

They are not so keen in giving up right away. Some, consider this a niche. Ford as already stated they are bring it in under their terms as I have recently posted here and for the Google thread.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Mean while, over at GM, for the 2016 model year, Chevy is getting both CarPlay and Android Auto.

Chevrolet to add CarPlay support to 14 vehicles for 2016 model year

As for FCA, who knows at this point.

Some time in June, the Kenwood models are due.

MLB finally released the CarPlay supported App. I do believe the season started sometime ago.

Maybe some other news will be released during the Apple WWC in a few days.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Saw this posted a couple of days ago:

Hyundai Making Android Auto Available to 2015 Sonata

Hyundai today claimed to be the first auto manufacturer to bring Android Auto support to its production vehicles. Hyundai is offering Android Auto to the 2015 Sonata to start. Owners of the Sonata can bring their car to a dealership for a software update containing Android Auto beginning today. Later this summer, Hyundai will let consumers install Android Auto on their own via USB drive. Android Auto lets compatible handsets (running Android 5.0 Lollipop and up) access select features, including maps, music, Google Now, and messaging, from the Sonata's in-dash navigation screen. Hyundai plans to offer Android Auto to other models later this year.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Hyundai is CarPlay's biggest supporters as well. In the beginning they had the best demo of CarPlay.

With the all news of the car manufactures coming out with both systems, the key to success on these platforms will be how fast the 3rd party apps come out. For me the navi apps are critical before i leap into CarPlay.

As they say, stay tuned.

Best for now.
