Re: Carplay

Greetings,

For those who have the 8.4 systems, 2014+, stay tuned for possible aftermarket solution finally.

iDatalink Speculation...

Kenwood should be releasing their CarPlay and Android Auto units shortly. Still no word on the Parrot with 720p screen.

Hopefully, this Monday maybe some more news will be released at Apple's WWDC. Like, navi apps. :roll eyes:

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

From the Apple WWDC:

It looks like Apple got their act together on Wireless CarPlay down the road. The other 2 items is the screen resolution and adaption of the O.E. Apps.

Apple just made a huge play to take over your car's dashboard | The Verge

Ok, that is nice. But, as I have been hasten thru this process I am still not eager to jump in. The adaption of the 3rd party Navi apps is a must. I do not think their will be any more news even after the conference ends this week.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Kenwood is now shipping their units for both Carplay & Android:

Kenwood's Aftermarket CarPlay and Android Auto Systems Now Shipping - Mac Rumors

Next up is the Parrot unit which still has no release data yet. The Parrot is interesting because of the HD Screen at 720p. The new vision of IOS 9 for Carplay is suppose to take advantage of this. Will other in the 2016 model start switching to HD screens is a good question in the aftermarket world.

Nothing new on the software front. I hoping that now that GM is slowly rolling out CarPlay equipment vehicles and the aftermarket world now has 3 manufactures shipping units, the software developers will start pickup interest again. The same also applies on the Android side.

Best for now.

Well this doesn't seem to bode well for CarPlay or Android Auto showing up in uConnect MY16.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

I do not see FCA doing anything until the refresh comes out. By that time they might forced to do something since their competition will have several models out with both systems. Maybe they will follow what Ford is doing. But one fact remains the same, the are stick with Uconnect do matter what.

Hopefully, iDatalink wil have a solution for those who are stuck with their current HU.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Don't assume an Android or Apple iOS based system is superior to the QNX/Blackberry designed 8.4AN.

Android is frequently unstable, and I've never been impressed with it's less than smooth performance. Every Android based head I've tried has been junk.

iOS, as a closed system, is a bit smoother performance wise, but as newer versions have packed in more features it too has become less stable.

These may be good alternatives for the manufacturers like Ford who've made nothing but crap systems that have been highly criticized, but Chrysler has nothing to apologize for with the 8.4AN. The Blackberry programmers have done a great job creating a dedicated in-vehicle system from the ground up, and the preview of the upcoming operating system update looks great. QNX, the operating system running the 8.4AN, is a "real time" system designed for applications where avoiding freezing and crashes are absolutely critical, like medical and manufacturing systems.

From PC Magazine August 2014:

The Uconnect 8.4AN infotainment system in the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 isn't all that new, itself. The system, with its 8.4-inch touch screen, was first introduced in 2011 and at the time was the largest touch screen on the market, pre-Tesla Model S and its massive 17-inch in-dash display. But even though it's a bit long in the tooth by tech standards (though updated by a recent software refresh), the Uconnect 8.4AN system in the 2015 Chrysler 200C that we tested (and that comes as part of the $1,395 Navigation and Sound Group option) is still one of the best available and our Editors' Choice, thanks to its large screen, intuitive interface, and useful features.

Greetings,

A very excellent statement.

Since I have been using computers going back to the mid 1970's, I have seen may of a operating system come and go. Some of them were superior to what the market standard was at the time and just did not get market share needed to survive.

Yes, Ford had to jump ship from Microsoft to QNX as the operating system in order to finally get MySyic to work. Pioneer did the same thing in their NEX headunits. As I have said previously over time, at least FCA (Chrysler) was smart enough to use QNX at the start.

In any event, I am still not rushing into CarPlay since I am in the IOS camp. Until I see more apps out their and in particular the Navi apps. In the meantime, I will continue using my Pioneer AppRadio 3 powered by Windows CE operating system speaking to my IOS smartphone.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Another reason an "agnostic" system from QNX or even Microsoft is preferable to one from Google or Apple is interoperability.

For instance, iPhone's SIRI doesn't work with the Android based system.

On Apple's Carplay, you can't access an Android phone's music library.

I think it's very unlikely Apple in particular has any interest in letting their competitor's phones work at anything other than a very basic level as a cell phone. Google hasn't been working very hard to let iOS interoperate with their system either.

Re: Carplay

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that support for Carplay or the Android equivalent requires using an OS from those manufacturers for the entertainment system itself. It's more of a "communication interface" that provides control of the iOS or Android devices from the entertainment system for convenience and potentially, more safety. How else would an entertainment system support both accommodations as some have, I believe, indicated they would? But maybe my thinking is flawed...

Greetings,

Yes, that is what happens.

The in-dash unit whether it is the OE or a aftermarket unit, it's sole purpose is to provide input and output for the processing and multitasking that takes place with in the respective smartphone (the brains). The in-dash unit is a really a terminal that is dumb, similar to the days of the mainframe/mini computer. This is the theory behind the principle. However, the smartphone does not control the in-dash processing, so can say this now similar to a local computer network (LAN). Which is now the true principle behind this.

Problems can and/or does exist depending on the systems that are interfaced too. Mostly, this happens when multitasking takes place between them. As I have indicated before, the early Pioneer Appradio Radio's were infamous for this resulting in crashes between both sources. You have to reboot between the devices to get back up and running just like a computer. I have my ways of dealing with this which includes disconnecting the battery of the JGC to reset the Pioneer.

The question becomes with the OE systems and likewise with the aftermarket unit, when you are playing your Pandora app (as of now it does not support CarPlay) via the in-dash and the navigation is done via the CarPlay/Android Auto. You now have an incoming phone call that is being routed thru CarPlay/Android Auto and excepted, now everything goes into background. Everything should return back to were you where. However, if the communications between them breakdown, thus the crash. This is just one of a few scenarios that could happen.

I have never studied QNX, but I believe it based on the UNIX operating system, it should have the I/O capabilities that UNIX is known for. QNX is a proven system and interfacing between various other devices such as the smartphone should be simpler provided that software is such. That is the key, how the developer codes the software program. So when CarPlay/Android Auto finally comes to JEEP, it should hopefully be a smooth system.

Bottom line, with this set up do not think about the classic audio/video system, think computer.

Best for now.
