Doubtful considering there seems to be hardware upgrades for MY17, just as there were for MY15. It's not necessarily just a software problem, in other words.

Re: Carplay

At the 2016 CES going on now, this was reported today:

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announced at the 2016 CES that the latest Uconnect infotainment system, now with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, will be available on select models in 2016.

Not sure if they are talking about Uconnect 8.4 but Edmund's seems to suggest they are.

Re: Carplay

They are on their second or third hardware iteration of the 8.4 Uconnect system in the JGC already. There's no indication that they are changing the name, but they have made hardware changes along the way...

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

From what I read, it looks like FCA wants to have an equally balance system between the headunit and the smartphone in terms of processing power and hopefully potential resolution improvement. Simply put, the do not want the same experience and complaints from the early days of Pioneer AppRadio. AppRadio has lag between the processing power of smartphone and the headunit.

Fiat Chrysler Announces Apple CarPlay in Select Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep Models - CarPlay Life - Apple CarPlay News, Installs, Apps and Reviews

It is important to have the right input and output connections with matching speed. The purpose of both CarPlay and Android Auto is to have a tablet experience via the smartphone instead on lugging around the tablet.

On other the aftermarket front, rumors are circulating that Sony is going to have headunits for CarPlay and Android Auto as well.

So with the car manufacture starting to release more units, maybe the 3rd party app developers will start looking into this platform with a better realization that the market is going. Their is a number of Social Media and Music apps out their. Now we did the Navi and other apps.

Hey member Subbie09, hang on. Maybe by some chance FCA will have an headunit upgrade in the works or the after market solution for the 8.4 is solved.

Best for now.

I would love if they could release an update for the 8.4 in the 14's in the future. I hope it's only a software thing, but I suspect it's more than that. Prob totally different hardware aspect

This was my first thought/hope upon reading up about this. If they release a Uconnect system that is compatible with Carplay or Android Auto, might it become easier for third party developers/manufacturers? Having to integrate the heating and air system, etc.

Maybe Chrysler would release their own headunit upgrade?

Continue to hope...

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Their are 3rd party apps for Pioneer Appradio that deals with the car functions. However I never got into those. Also a version for Android.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dash...321293183?mt=8

You can contact them and see what they say.

From my understanding by viewing some of the other car manufactures early CarPlay demo videos, it was extremely easy to go back and forth between CarPlay and the vehicle controls. So the real question is how does the system multitask. Your question is a valid one.

As for the headunit, time will tell. With the 8.4 Uconnect, any interface will be expensive since the Uconnect module is built into the Uconnect headunit. For example, some of Alpine's big screen units with a interface go for a couple of thousand.

As the say, stay tuned.

Best for now.

If I wanted to install an after market head unit such as the 8100NEX would I still have access to the system controls such as heating/doors/locks/etc that come with the UConnect 8.4 in the JGC?

Greetings,

Unfortunately, with your Uconnect system and the 8.4 their is no 3rd party interface currently available. The closet thing that was being worked was from iDatalink (ADS). I have not heard any further news when it going to be ready. If it does come to market, it is going to be expensive similar to Alpine and their 009 series which has other manufactures controllers and the iDatalink controller built in. The Uconnect controller is presently built into the headunit, therefore, any aftermarket headunit will have the same.

You can give ADS a call see where their status is.

With regards to the Pioneer 8100 Nex, that unit has limited system integration. The new one coming out, 8200 Nex will have more.

Best for now.

Unfortunately, as was just mentioned, there's no aftermarket solution that CAN be used in MY14-16 JGC. They changed the electrical bus and it's not yet been "cracked" by the adapter makers. And the incorporation of many of the vehicle controls into the "radio"...which is more of a computer...makes for a difficult situation even beyond making the wires work. So if you want to do work on the sound system, it will be from the head output on out.

Re: Carplay

What are the chances of just buying the new 2016 Uconnect with CarPlay from Jeep and replacing the current one in the Jeep?
