If and when it might be orderable as a replacement part...you'll be talking major expensive most likely...

Very expensive. Just traded my 2011 WK2 for a 2016 KL TH. The Uconnect 8.4 has so much of the vehicles setting incorporated from heated seats to the on/off of engine auto stop/start. Entertainment is the smaller part of the system. I think it would be difficult to get it to work correctly transplanted into an older vehicle. Better options out there for your needs.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Besides replacing the headunit, you are replacing the Uconnect system as well. Prior to 2014 subject models, the Uconnect was a separate system. As I said in a recent pos regarding the 2014+ 8.4 models, the Uconnect system is built into the headunit. All the connections of the HI Speed Cam Bus enter into the Uconnect and the head unit is the bidirectional I/O for all the system controls. The other unknown factor is, between 2014 and present, how many changes in the information be sent thru Cam Bus? Their might have to be different models for different years.

Which is why this is going to be expensive. This is all on speculation that FCA will implement this. This also why the aftermarket world has not yet produced the interface based on these factors. Is their a market for this that companies can make back profits on all the R&D needed to crack this?

In the meantime your best bet is look into on of the many LockPick systems out their to see which one meets your needs.

Best for now.

Can the lockpick systems add CarPlay functions into the UConnect system?

Greetings,

I really do not know that answer. Their is a few lockpick threads out with really great members that might be able to help you.

A good percentage of the music apps do work. I am not so sure on the social media apps. GPS apps also work to some degree.

The question that you want to ask also, can you control the apps from the factory headunit or do they have still be controlled by the smart device?

Best for now.

Greetings,

Here is some interesting news, but not about FCA:

Apple's CarPlay wins Autoblog 2016 Technology of the Year award

Hey Apple, how about relaxing some of your requirements so we can get the 3rd party navi apps going.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

I totally a ignorant about CarPlay. I have the 8.4 and have the iPhone 6plus and was just looking at the apps part of the infotainment and saw all the choices. Too bad I've spent a good chunk of my wallet over the years buying music and my phone has so much. Add in SiriusXM and some of the music apps seem redundant. I do miss theGrand Cherokees Nav that showed you gas stations when traveling it I guess Yelp is supposed to act similarly?

Any hints invest apps that are actually worth my data usage would be helpful.

Greetings,

For social media and podcast apps, I really do not listen to them. The sad part with the Navi, until more come on the scene their is nothing doing at the movement. However, music, their is plenty of them. On my Pioneer AppRadio, I have 4 apps I listen too because of the vast selections and different material they offer. For me I am pretty covered. The 4 are Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio and Aupeo which at the present moment is not offered on CarPlay.

Check out CarPlaylife.com for details on CarPlay. Here is an interesting video on the latest IOS 9.3 for CarPlay that will be shortly released:

New Apple CarPlay Features in iOS 9.3 Preview - CarPlay Life - Apple CarPlay News, Installs, Apps and Reviews

Apple Maps as you have read is still catching up. I do think Apple is up to something that might be release in the next IOS 10. In the video it show the new NEARBY feature and that looks very similar to an app that I used that was compatible for AppRadio, Motion X Drive. Motion X Drive began to use the database from Apple Maps and now it not listed on iTunes any longer. Which leads me to speculate is this one of numerous companies that Apple purchase and did not release any details?

Apple Music is starting to looking interesting and I might replace it instead of using Aupeo. Aupeo has let me down on the way the work the premium service.

Best for now.

That's the price you pay for being locked in to Apple's ecosystem, my friend. 😉

Greetings,

I think Apple needs a visit from the Jedi Knights quickly.

This is the only thing that I have complaint about since switching to Apple OS X & IOS 5 years ago. Relax the navi requirements to get all those wonderful apps for POI, weather, terrain and other fun stuff.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

I just recently wrote to Sygic, a 3rd party Navi app again and got a response from the head honcho (CEO) regarding Sygic for CarPlay:

Thank you for your e-mail. We really ask Apple to be in the list of first adopters, but Apple is hardly talking to Automotive players. Even large OEMs like General Motors have got allowed just 1 app certificate to be working on CarPlay from Apple.

They do not disclose anything and give no access to any developer so far. We hope to change it soon, but as Apple the same Google just do what they want on this market.

If there is any option, we would be more then happy to immediatelly jump onto CarPlay but have no access to SDK so far.

Regards,
Michal Stencl

It looks like the social network, podcasts and music apps have the first crack.

2016 WWDC from Apple is only a few months away. Maybe some news by then.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Nothing new and existing other than a waiting game.

Apple did release some improvements to CarPlay for Maps and Music in IOS 9.3 that has been out in beta for a long time. I believe this is the first feature upgrade they did for CarPlay other than a major IOS upgrade.

Best for now.
