Re: Carplay

Any update on when the speed limit will show in Apple Maps on CarPlay similar to other navi systems. Also does Apple plan on allowing other navi based apps ie. Waze, Google Maps to appear in CarPlay as well? Thank you!

Re: Carplay

Check out Apple's immediate plans for Carplay from Brian Tong's podcast 31. He discusses CarPlay beginning at 23:14. Very informative. Seems more hype than substance!

I notice many are waiting for MY17's to integrate CarPlay.

Greetings,

After listening to the podcast, it is the same story again.

The majority of the major music and podcast services are now pretty much available for both CarPlay and Android Auto. It seems that both companies are dug in to get their respective GPS product to out do one and other. While other 3rd party apps sit on the side lines as they are forced to stick with the guidelines. Just a few posts ago I posted Sygic response to my question. It is a shame that Pioneer's AppRadio did have go power. At least they did not put massive restriction on developers and maintained open SDK's.

As for CarPlay, hopefully at this year's Apple WWDC conference in the beginning of June, there will be significant progress as oppose to last year.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

It is about 2 weeks to go before the WWDC conference and the important keynote presentation by Tim Cook.

As I said for many times, an infotainment system is not complete if you do not have the rest of the apps. Sygic has an open letter out to both Apple and Google to allow them develop 3rd party navi apps and encouraging the user base to write in. They provide a direct link to the both customer service sites. Besides navi, their other apps that for example you can get with AppRadio and other car manufacture systems.

On the hardware side for OE, nothing new on any further announcements by FCA since early this spring. Aftermarket Headunits are being released now from their initial introduction at CES 2016. Alpine has announced a the 9 inch version dedicated to Carplay and Android Auto for certain Jeep vehicles.

As for me, I will limp along with AppRadio for a while until I see more progress or my headunit finally goes.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

At this year's Apple WWDC, we finally got some upgrades to CarPlay. Mostly in their Maps App:

Beyond helping users find their car, Maps will see other significant changes in iOS 10, most notably the ability for third-party applications to add functionality via extensions. At this week's Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple showed how app extensions will enable users to search for restaurants, book a reservation, request a car, and pay for the car without the need to open another app.

Other features include quick access to destinations along a current route, such as gas stations or restaurants. Maps will also provide information on traffic conditions and current road hazards, and the view will zoom in or out appropriately based on speed, location and upcoming route.

Here is some more detail also:

http://www.macrumors.com/2016/06/14/carplay-wwdc-2016/

They are still behind in navigation with their Maps App, but it is something. The one thing they should have made sure was the ability to have off-line mapping capabilities via the cache. Maybe in the next 4 months before the final release they could get it in.

So, based on this I can not see 3rd party navi apps coming shortly. Only apps that could work with the extensions.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Here is a very good preview video of the new MAPS. The CarPlay is demo towards the end.

As much as I enjoy using Apple products, I am still reserving my decision.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Hardware:

On the aftermarket front, it looks like those who have the current 2014+ 8.4 Uconnect OE headunit, can finally upgrade into the aftermarket headunit.

The following thread is made possible by fellow member FARFROMOVIN and the credit belongs toour fellow member:

Scrapped factory system

I have not keep up on the progress of iDatalink Maestro, but we now have a working JGC with it. The headunit is from Kenwood, the 893S which can do either CarPlay or Android Auto. It best to search the iDatalink's website and see which radios work in conjunction with our WK2.

Granted, this not cheap, but you be surprised on the results that a new HU can deliver.

iDatalink - Maestro - Maestro RR

As far running CarPlay or even Android Auto on the WK2, I have not come across anything at the present. I do know that some Chrysler and Dodge vehicles is now in the process of being delivered with them. If anybody knows more information, by all means chime in.

Software:

Still, no movement on the 3rd party navi apps on either side. All the major music, social media and podcast apps are available.

As more and more vehicles from the various auto manufactures are being these system to the market, the market for more apps should be happening over the next year as software development is slowly moving forward.

Hopefully, the next CES show in the beginning of next year will have some sort of indication.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

The Jeep brand is getting CarPlay and Android Auto as an OE solution for 2017. However, right now the announcement was only for the Compass.

Jeep joins support for Apple CarPlay with 2017 Compass

Like always, the Grand Cherokee has to wait. Thank you FCA.

Stay tuned.

Best for now.

It's NOT software !! You need a Gen 4 UConnect Radio.

One requirement is it needs a Screen that can handle Multi-Touch (as in Pinching). No Pinching, no Car Play.

Yes it is. You don't need pinch to get CarPlay to work. Goal is to get your phone back to show up on the Jeep nav. One solution is mirror of the phone with touch enabled. You obviously haven't heard of RAX jail-breaker.

Sure you could get most of Car Play to work. But Apple wouldn't allow it because it will give it a bad rap when the interface assumes you have multi touch. FCA is not gonna do a 3/4 implementation and have reviews say it sucks. It's never gonna happen.
