If Chrysler doesn't make this work for us and If our 2011-2014 jeeps use the same OS that other car companies are using with carplay then I bet someone will make hack of some sort. I'd hack my radio/phone for this tech.

Re: Carplay

News: Chrysler to get Apple CarPlay or not?

Today, several articles were published by various media outlets, talking about the use of Apple’s new CarPlay service in various cars. Chrysler has been conspicuously left out of most of these articles. The company responded with a statement:
Chrysler Group has a strong relationship with Apple. Our companies are focused on iPhone and iPod compatibility testing with Chrysler Group’s current Uconnect Systems, and we continue to discuss and explore technologies that can further enhance the driving experience and keep drivers focused on the road.
According to Apple, CarPlay allows one to use the iPhone with a car’s built in display to “get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music,” starting with some 2014 model-year cars; it features Siri voice control, set up for driving. It works with the car’s knobs, buttons, or touch-screen. As UConnect Access does, it can read and reply to text messages.
Apple’s web site shows that the system will be available in 2014 on Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, and Mercedes cars, with “future models from committed partners” BMW, Chevrolet/Opel, Citroën, Ford, Kia, Land Rover, Nissan, Peugeot, Subaru, and Suzuki. Chrysler is absent from the list. The system currently only works with iPhone 5 models (including C and S). The current message appears to be that Chrysler will be sitting the system out for the moment, but may choose to opt in later.

Not trying to be a hater but Uconnect does most of these things natively for 90+% of the smartphone market so why would Chrysler want to offer an interface that caters to only 1/3 of smart phone users when they can support all of them?

Most analysis show Apple has peaked and isn't growing in smartphone market share. They are huge but what does the future hold? Cross platform compatibility seems like a good idea in a diverse market.

Am I missing something here?

I hear you, but it says something that all but two major manufacturers are on board. Although UConnect is a top-notch automotive OS, it's still not as polished or as fluid and easy to use as an iphone or Android phone. I have a mount for my phone on the vent and use that primarily for navigation for two reasons - it's super quick and easy to enter a destination address and, most importantly, google & apple maps have much more thorough traffic information where it counts for me - on the backroads on my commute to and from work. For that reason, I'd love to have either of those apps on the big screen in my car. Most other things the UConnect does really well -- much better than the Ford MySync system.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

For those who want the aftermarket version headunit with CarPlay, it looks like we have to wait and see. From what I have read last week, Pioneer is back tracking right now along with some of the other top manufactures. If Pioneer is going to anything this year, it will be demoed at this fall's Sema show or next May/June 2015, when the usually announce the next AppRadio model. If other manufactures do anything it might be late 2015 or 2016. This all depends on how the OEM version is doing.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Bummer. I'll probably rule Jeep out if they don't have something better than uconnect.
