Greetings,

You should not have a problem as long as you use the right harness kit. When I installed my Pioneer AppRadio 3 to replace my 430 (no navi) their was no problem using the PAC Audio harness set up.

If you are going to switch to the Pioneer NEX headunits, as of now is the only units from Pioneer that is geared to Carplay, i would suggest looking into iDatalink Maestro by ADS. My feeling at the moment is this harness will be better suited for Carplay. The 2014 NEX line up from Pioneer does not make use of the extra vehicle information thru the iDatalink.

iDatalink - Maestro - SR-CHR01-DS

Alpine is due out later this summer or early fall and they will make use of the iDatalink.

Best for now.

I am still really interested to see what comes out of the Open Automotive Alliance, especially considering everything nVidia and Audi have been doing with infotainment lately.
Greetings,

Obsolete hardware also leds to obsolete software.

For last few years companies such as Garmin and Igo Primo have offered the auto industry a solution to upgrade the Navigation software thru the use of the Smartphone. GM thru Chevy have implemented such a solution using the software from BringGO.com in certain models. The software feature updates and map updates are loaded into the headunit for seamless integration.

The car audio aftermarket world has started to wake up finally by upgrading the units with more current CPU power, better OS software and more units with the capacitive screens. With these advancements, it is now easier to connect the smartphone/tablet connection for a smooth operation in the head units. I would love to see the resolution of the screen match that of the iPhone. Volvo in their new systems will have that type of hi res computer screen, just like Tesla did. I sawed it at this past NYIAS during the holidays.

Regardless of which format that is out now or forth coming, the age of obsolescence of automotive infotainment systems is coming to end. With these system, those who love the OEM can keep it with out going into the aftermarket world or those who are in the aftermarket world can now keep the units longer without having to upgrade within the next 2 years and fork out more hundreds of dollars.

Best for now.

I hope you're right. It's one thing to buy a new smartphone or tablet every year or two... It's another to buy a new car every few years.

Thanks, I'll be waiting to check out the Alpine line. That was always my brand from back when I used to do car audio builds.

Greetings,

I also want to see the Alpine line before I pull the plug on Carplay.

I am hoping that Alpine will use 4v pre outs. In the past, when they go the 4v route, they either use the Burr-Brown or Wilson digital to analog converter chips. This will give you an outstanding sound quality.

It would be nice for them if they made the forth coming x009 hu with a real hi res screen to work with Carplay. If the auto industry is starting to go that way with hi res screens, then the car audio aftermarket folks better start rethinking their display designs. Then their will no need for a tablet in vehicle or having to lug it around.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

For the aftermarket users or potential buyers that are interested in Apple's Carplay, I came across this series of video presentations from Pioneer's demo last week.

This link is from Digital Trends with 3 separate short videos in conduction with the reporters written writeup. The video also has the VP from Pioneer demoing the unit:

Hands on: Apple's CarPlay and Pioneer's AVIC-8000NEX in-dash receiver | Digital Trends

The next video is a complete one with various different segments:

Hands on with Apple CarPlay | Digital Trends

I would watch the videos from both links.

June 2nd, Apple is suppose to release more details about Carplay. I hope they address more about 3rd party apps in particular the navi both internet and offline maps. Personally, I got used to having my gps navi app have the overlays with traffic conditions. Navfree, Waze, MotionX, both Apple maps and Google Maps just name a few them. Some of these apps also work on the Android Market as well.

A 2nd issue that I did not see is how does the Carplay work with multitasking between apps. With my AppRadio, I have that ability. I like to switch back in forth between my music and navi apps, music and Inrix Traffice app, or even music and a POI specific app. They did address the issue between the NEX sources and Carplay. But, their was now mention if were using the NEX navigation (custom iGO Primo for Poineer) and playing music from Carplay, what happens to the voice navigation?

Another issue that they did not talk about and has to be addressed, is how does Siri handle road noise? In the video, the voice instructions are clear and pronounced. If Siri has hard time learning your voice pattern, then how effective is the safe driving mode? I does look like you can use touch commands.

I am sure Alpine is rushing their unit as well, now that Pioneer is just about ready to release. I have still not found or heard any rumors about Kenwood with Carplay yet.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Here is quick update on the aftermarket Carplay and nothing new on the uConnect front that I found online.

From my understanding, Apple at the developers conference last week went over the software development kits with the potential 3rd party developers. The only new 3rd party app displayed was MLB at bat (major league baseball). Otherwise, no new details were released. As for the 3rd party navi apps, still no answer.

They did have demo cars setup for people to listen too.

Sneaking a peek at CarPlay

Hands On With Apple’s CarPlay In The Ferrari FF | TechCrunch

If you listen carefully to the Ferrari video, the Apple rep mentions that Apple Maps makes use of the OEM GPS antenna. This is the first time I heard about that and cannot find any other information to verify it.

So it looks like we have to wait for this month for Pioneer's Carplay release to find out about more information. Before I rush into it, I want to see Alpine's Carplay system.

Best for now.

Hey 1stJCG, I know this is a Carplay thread, but I thought you and others might find it interesting that it looks like Google will be introducing its new Carplay competitor at the Google I/O conference in two weeks.

Rumor: An Early Look At Google's Interface For Android In The Car
Greetings,

Thanx,

It looks like another head to head coming up. I can not see how Microsoft is going to compete against these 2 heavy weight systems. Another interesting thing, Pioneer at this time, usually has introduce the next AppRadio. I am beginning to think that the NEX line will be spilt between Carplay and Google. As I have said in the past, stay tuned, a lot of things about to happen over next year or so both in the OEM world and aftermarket world.

This is why most likely Kenwood has not made a decision in which direction they want to go in. I want to see also are better screen resolutions now that other OEM's starting to have them.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

For those you are looking at the aftermarket CarPlay units, Pioneer is still on hold and from what I can tell, Alpine has not release any new information since their 1st press release. I guess Kenwood is waiting to see how both CarPlay and Google play out.

According many different sources Pioneer is waiting for the final ok from Apple. So those who already purchased NEX units, you are going to have to wait patiently. This could be any number of reasons:
  1. Waiting for the OEM's to release the cars equipment with CarPlay.
  2. Apple is suppose to have a major update to their Maps app that was suppose to be in beta for the WWDC.
  3. Waiting to see what Google is doing first in order to see how to leap frog them.
  4. A new version of IOS 7.1.2 is due within days or weeks.
  5. Apple did not like something form Pioneer and Pioneer is fixing it.
  6. Waiting for a few more 3rd party apps to arrive.

Your guess is good as mine.

For those you are interested in the Google product, check out this excellent thread if you have not catch it yet:
