I knew that I was getting the wonderful Premium Alpine Surround Sound system that when I first heard might my ears go crazy. Not problem, I made my own adjustments. By next production year, many will have the ability to use both systems, if they ever come out.

For the record, I am an Apple smartphone user.

Best for now.
Yeah I am one of those odd people that prioritizes the interior technology above most everything else. I left Range Rover because I hated how outdated the technology was in the car, especially for the price you are paying for it. I have only had the Jeep a week, but the technology kills the range rover in almost every aspect with the exception of the sound system. The harmon kardon doesn't compare to the newest range rover sound system.

To be honest though, I didn't leave Range Rover for Jeep. I left Range Rover for BMW and then added the Jeep because we had another baby. But now having the Jeep, I feel ripped off having those range rovers. This car has pretty much everything the range rover has for much less.

Most people wait for the baby to be old enough to drive before buying them a new car.

One excuse is as good as another! I'm done making babies....will getting another dog be good enough? I'd like a Charger SRT.

I depend on my phone more than my car, again, I am probably in the minority. But I would rather switch cars than phones. That is if I am already buying a new car, I wouldn't randomly replace the car.

In all honesty car manufactures should put in hardware that would be able to dual boot both systems.
Why would you have to switch phones? It's just another feature that wouldn't be supported if you had the "wrong" phone. Just because you can't use the Carplay with your Android phone, for example, doesn't mean everything else won't work! Bluetooth will still work! Streaming could still work!

We'll see how it plays out, but chances are you'll be able to use all phones in all cars, you just won't be able to use screen mirroring or phone control if you have the wrong phone.

No way I'm switching phones either, but it's not like cars will be unusable if you have the "wrong" phone. I don't see car makers pigeon holing themselves like that.

I could very much be wrong, but I figured the car manufactures would stop worrying about putting in nav software and media features if it was able to come from the phone.

But I just looked at the carplay website and the android auto website and both sites list some of the same car manufacturers. For example Jeep is on both. I am curious if they will make you choose when building the car or if they will be able to run both simultaneously.

lol, I can't fit an infant seat and a toddler seat safely in the BMW, and I liked the car too much to want to get rid of it. So my (genius?) solution was to add another car to the lineup.

I suspect either option will be an app that can be loaded or enabled on the head unit. I doubt any manufacturer is going to embed iOS or Android as the base OS just to have the interface available.

As long as you can teach it to drive ... at high speed.

IMHO, the car companies don't want to get into the middle of this war. The companies that provide the bits and the hardware (e.g Harman) are going to have to support both. Probably not simultaneously, but I suppose that's possible (though it really doesn't make sense to have two phones working car system at the same time)

Neither iOS nor Android is a good fit for the current telematics architectures.. my gut says the next generation of vehicles will see the audio/nav/video firewalled off from the rest of the vehicle.. at which point having some consumer-OS-based solution for those things might make sense.

IMHO.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

There are rumors out their that the Uconnect could adapt to either one. The Uconnect software is written in QNX which makes either IOS or Android software integrate easier. However, I have had not found any source that is worthy to back this rumor up.

As I said some weeks ago in this thread, both system are still in their early stages of development even though Apple is way ahead and currently stalled in their tracks. The key to all this is how well the 3rd party development community approaches either system. It took almost 2 years for Pioneer's AppRadio to catch on and develop their own niche of follows. Some of the initial apps developed for the AppRadio dropped support due to lack of interest and some those that did drop only a small percentage return with new versions to support the AppRadio.

The other thing that since the introduction of CarPlay was announced over a year ago, both car manufactures and the current aftermarket head units have not developed the hi res screens to harness the graphic power of the smartphones. The only exception so far that I know of is the new Volvo XC90 SUV.

Currently, their are many systems out their which have been talked about in this forum to integrate the tablets in both IOS and Android via the lockpic or wifi. And you do not have to worry whether your favorite app will work.

The sole reason I am interested in CarPlay since I am an Apple user, it is a lot easier to carry the smartphone around when you leave the vehicle and the easier integration than AppRadio which does freeze up at times.

Best for now.

Nominate Re: Carplay

Greetings,

According to this article, if you head over to Italy and go buy a Ferrari today, you might catch one with CarPlay ready to go.

Carplay is officially launched for Ferrari - NEX - AVIC411.com

So lets see what happens tomorrow.

BTW, I am still waiting to see Alpine's aftermarket CarPlay Unit, if it is a 9 inch version, then I might think about it.

Best for now.

Am I missing something here?
You are spot on. The only thing you are missing is that you must realize that Apple will claim to have invented all those features after they release them....
