Nothing new on the OEM side for the Uconnect.

Best for now.
Wait... has there been some sense that UConnect systems (RA4AN?) would add in Carplay support?

That'd be nice.

Greetings,

As of today, their has not been a timetable released by Chrysler when they are going to implement it. For what I understand, it is possible that the late 2015 builds might be able to get it. Otherwise, you are looking at sometime in the 2016 production runs.

Their was a rumor that existing Uconnect system might be able to get it thru a firmware update. I have not read anything that backs this up. Nor, at this time my service center has confirmed this. I did ask my tech to watch out for any news so I can pass it on.

Best for now.

I think the consensus is that it is possible to implement it in the current Uconnect system because it is based on QNX. But the real question is not if it's possible but if they will implement it in already released 2014 and 2015 vehicles as a software update.

Thanks for the info.

I've been doing a little research, and trying to read between the lines on what might be possible. Sharing below in case anyone might not already know these things:

1) UConnect runs on the QNX operating system:

2013-2014 UConnect 2: the next generation

Quote:
UConnect 8.4 is built atop QNX, a tight and secure version of UNIX developed by RIM (the Blackberry™ telephone maker).
2) Hardware in the RA4 is decent:

Texas Instruments OMAP-DM3730 And Uconnect Access

3) Apple Carplay and Android Auto run on top of QNX:

QNX in the middle of ongoing in-car mobile device integration evolution | MobileSyrup.com

Essentially, both IOS and Android devices in the future will project their car functionalities through an app or something equivalent within QNX-based systems.

Quote:
“Apple and Google aren’t replacing anything in the car, they’re projecting an experience into the car from a mobile device,” says Derek Kuhn, VP of sales and marketing at QNX, in an interview. “And that has to work hand in hand with what’s in the vehicle. They were looking for a more seamless integration inside, and they had the market clout to pull something like this off and get the automakers on board.”
4) Supposedly, the new 2015 GC head unit has "upgraded" hardware:

new lockpick for the 8,4 uconnect, 99% software - Page 52 - Jeep Garage - Jeep Forum

Quote:
ooh almost forgot 2015 headunits has been upgraded!!! at the moment our RAX is not compatible with this units, it´s not that we can´t do them but we need a unit and have to rewrite our software. The official firmware version is 14.39 and will not work on MY 13 or MY14, so they really changed some major stuff. I think that it could be upgraded hardware like processor, XMSIrius decoder and etc.
I think it's possible that the RA4s (especially the 2015 models) could get an upgrade to enable further IOS and/or Android functionality.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

That is correct, that current Uconnect models are running under QNX and has been reported here for a while now. And Harman is kicking themselves in you know what for selling this branch a few years ago to RIM.

When you have a stable environment such as a true Unix based system, the input and output moves fluidly. OS's such as CP/M, Wang and Digital just to a few were never know for that implantation of I/O and Unix has stood the test of time. One could only speculate if Pioneer used QNX as the OS at AppRadio's launch 3 years ago instead of Windows. Would Google or Apple jump on the bandwagon?

So, hopefully for those who have a current OE headunit, there verdict is still out if a firmware update is available for either CarPlay or OAA. This coming CES 2015 should be interesting if the aftermarket world provides interfaces to allow for the aftermarket head units for the Uconnect.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Does anyone currently have a Pioneer NEX installed in their car (with or without the Carplay firmware update)? I would love to see what it looks like installed, if the factory installed Backup Camera, steering wheel controls, and Microphone still work. I have a 2011 Overland with a 430N, for reference.

Thanks!

Greetings,

I do not know if you seen this or not. But here is are independent 4 part video showing CarPlay in action on a NEX 4000. The video show very little on the NEX side on how it multitasks between the NEX and CarPlay.

Video Walkthrough of Apple CarPlay on Pioneer Receiver Shows Siri, Phone, Maps, and More - Mac Rumors

The NEX 4000 is primary an updated version of the 7 inch AppRadio 3 SPH-210 which is currently installed in my 2011. It also has the functionality from AVH multimedia line. The audio quality of the NEX is much better with 4 volt pre-out if you are going with aftermarket amps and other audio features. The bottom buttons are layer out al little differently.

The Mastero iDatalink will allow you to take advantage of integrating to the Uconnect. I do not know how iDatalink works with CarPlay. I am still using the factory backup camera that is hooked up to the AppRadio 3 which gives you a very clear picture. I felt their was no need to change it. I am using a PAC harness for now. Sorry, no pictures of the rear camera output.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

I did see the videos showing off Carplay (those videos are what prompted me to see what an aftermarket unit looks like in our Jeep and if the uconnect features work with them). So no issues using the factory Microphone and speakers for phone calls, steering wheel controls, or the backup camera? If you dont mind my asking, how much was the Mastero iDatalink. Thanks for taking the time to reply and provide a picture of the install!

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

I did not install Maestro iDatalink since the AppRadio at the time does not support it. Also the it was not available to last winter for Jeep.

iDatalink - Maestro - Search

Crutchfield sells it:

iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR Interface Module Connect a new stereo and retain the steering wheel audio controls and factory amps in select 2006-up Ford, GM, Chrysler, and VW vehicles at Crutchfield.com

I am not sure about the factory mic with iDatalink, it should be able to work. ADS, which manufactures it up in Montreal Canada, has an excellent tech department. Give them call, they can verify the information for you as well as the Alpine units. Remember, Alpine still did not release the official specifications on their CarPlay units.

The rear view camera on my AppRadio radio has the same sharpness when I had the the 430.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

So far, I have found no reviews of the Ferrari's CarPlay. I was interested in how CarPlay multitasks with the OE Head Unit.

Pioneer CarPlay problems are still reporting in as mixed results. Majority of the reviews seam to like how the UI works. Same problems as I reported before. Some are even turning CarPlay off for a lack of 3rd party apps. Until the Alpine units come out, their is really no way to determine how well CarPlay is running.

I am hoping the current results from the Pioneer users do not give a negative impact on the 3rd party developers. Some of the key ones have been burned in the past with Pioneer and the AppRadio. When Alpine comes aboard and hopefully with better results and Kenwood makes up their mind, then 3rd party world will have a better incentive to move in the direction of CarPlay. Which will also help with the apps for Google's OAA.

One of my music apps that I use on AppRadio, Aupeo, responded to my request for CarPlay. They responded that in the first year of year they will be looking into for a possible mid year release. Nothing still on the navi side. I am waiting a reply from Sygic.

Member SEEINGWHITE believes that the current processors in the Uconnect Units might not have enough computing power. Even through the main crushing is done on the smartphone, the integration between the two could result in a lag between commands. This is a problem with the early AppRadio's.

I am sure the folks of over at Google OAA are monitoring develops with CarPlay.

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Other than Ferrari on the OE side, it does seam to be a waiting game on who makes the first move. Or, they are waiting to see the first results from the Pioneer Units.

Now that CarPlay has been out a couple of weeks on the aftermarket side, it is by no doubts the 1st generation debugging event. I am sure the Apple people are working with the developers from Pioneer and other 3rd party apps to get the initial bugs worked. Which I guess why other 3rd party apps that are official listed on Apple website is still on the sidelines. I do find it interesting that Apple Beats has not been activated yet for CarPlay.

3rd party apps that are working as of now: Spotify seams to have problems and they are working to resolve them asap. Meanwhile, Rdio (I never used yet) was release last week with very good results and practically no problems. MLB, my guess either they will release it for the winter talks or by spring training. 3rd party navi apps, MIA still.

Still no word from Alpine on a release date or any model specs other than the preliminary from last springs announcement. Kenwood started to release the first of the specs for the 2015 lineup with nothing on CarPlay or Google OAA.

My early read, it looks like everybody is watching how Pioneer deals with the introduction of CarPlay.

Stay tuned .......

Best for now.

NOTE: Spotify released a new version this morning to correct problems with CarPlay. Waiting on results.
