Re: Carplay

Ferrari uses the same UConnect system as Chrysler. The California's system is an exact match to the 2012 Grand Cherokees RHR units. I wonder if a software update can add the CarPlay support?

It looks like Carplay will use bluetooth for communication. So while it may be possible to update our systems with Carplay, it is highly unlikely.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

It could be bluetooth to control the I/O as the same in the AppRadio, etc...

Here is an interesting read:

Inside the tech behind CarPlay, Apple's new in-vehicle infotainment system

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

iOS in car will be in Chrysler vehicles... when it was announced a few months back, Chrysler was listed. I think it will just take time before it shows up... it seems they are putting a lot into this new Uconnect system. Maybe they can add it in as a feature later.

Re: Carplay

It would be nice if you could merely update any of the uconnect capable radios to handle carplay. Uconnect runs off QNX which is what all the other systems running carplay is based on. I hope they dont lock out prior generation radios/vehicles from this.

Re: Carplay

Sure seems like it would be a selling point in a new model and not something that would be rolled out to older models.

That being said I'd love to see it, and it seems like the UConnect that we have is certainly capable of integrating with it on the surface.

Greetings,

Chrysler was not mentioned in the latest PR release.

Watching the videos on how it works, it does seam extremely impressive. My AppRadio has a lag between operations. Carplay moves perfectly, just like a smartphone. So I guess, i have to wait for an aftermarket unit.

Hands-on with Apple's CarPlay: when Siri met Ferrari (video)

The MB and Volvo have their own tailored UI's

Best for now.

Re: Carplay

Just read this article about Mercedes wanting to provide Carplay to older vehicles. This could be promising since Carplay would sit on top of Uconnect.

Mercedes wants to bring CarPlay to older vehicles this year

So funny, I read the engadget article about CarPlay over lunch today and was going to post that I hoped Chrysler would have mercy on us, the soon to be legacy UConnect users, and provide either a software upgrade or an aftermarket module to allow us to use CarPlay once it finally launches on Chrysler vehicles. If it's not this year, they'll surely do it soon after.

But if CarPlay's base OS is QNX, wouldn't that mean that UConnect would need to be running on the same base OS? Or they'd have to port it over to run on whatever UConnect is running on similar to how an application would be ported between desktop operating systems or even mobile OS'. That's the only thing that makes me believe that we will have to purchase a new Jeep in order to get a CarPlay compatible infotainment system... though I certainly hope I'm wrong.

Uconnect is built on QNX, not Carplay, so it's feasible. Chrysler owe us nothing, but hopefully they do throw us a bone.

Re: Carplay

Greetings,

Carplay is Apple's IOS. Both QNX and IOS is based on a variation of the UNIX computer operating system.

Best for now.
