Re: CB Radio Install

Great info! Thanks Folks. Now it's time to check the features on the Cobra vs the Midland and get to work.

My current radio (Uniden Pro 520XL) does not fit in the compartment in front of the shifter and I'd prefer to keep it tucked away. Thanks in advance for the input.
I have a Midland 75-820 which I have been happy with.
currently use with a mag mount antennae that doesn't work that well. Only use it when offroading so don't really want an antennae in the way all the time.

This is the antenna I'm using. Mag mounted and only 8" tall so I leave it on all the time. Works great in the 2-4 mile range once tuned with an SWR meter. Which is all I need on interstate or on the trail for comms between vehicles.

[QUOTE="BigCat;877309"]I'm using the midland in my JGC with an 8 inch stubby antenna that once tuned with an SWR meter works great for a 2-4 mile range. Which is all I need on the interstate or on the trail for comms within a group. Cost me $35 shipped with an extension cable routed from the lift gate tucked under trim to the center console.

Sorry about the double post. Had WiFi issues yesterday

Re: CB Radio Install

Only use mine when off roading or long trips. Have a hand held Cobra with a attachable magnetic mount. Since I only use it a few times a year, not worth my trouble finding a permanent mount.

This is what I did..
And removed the flip up in front of center console, and mounted and wired in radio there.

Where did you get the antenna & mount? Can you share a shot of the radio install? Looks good. I really like the small 8" antenna posted by BigCat but I'd like to keep the cb antenna away from the stock antenna.

Link to Mount.. Door Jamb CB Antenna Mount Terminal | Right Channel Radios

Ran the antenna lead, up through existing grommet in tyre well, and along under carpet into center console, power also to back of key activated cig lighter.
Mounted CB Radio on wooden square, size of bottom of compartment, and covered base with rubber. Just sits there and can be removed by unscrewing antenna lead and unplug power.

Blue wire on closeup of bracket, is for earth, will hide behind later.
Did not have to cut a hole or modify any thing to install, apart from the four holes drilled into taillight housing.

Radio is GME Model TX-3510
Antenna is from GME as well. Model AE4005.

Hey Mr Big,

Where did you attach the other end of that blue ground wire?

Also, how well has the mount held up on the plastic of taillight? I see you have a short antenna but how much antenna weight and stress do you think it would support?

Re: CB Radio Install

I was able to ground my mount to a screw located just a few inches below the tail light. I used a multimeter to check for continuity to the frame and battery for ground.

With a 3' firefly antenna I was able to get decent SWR from this location.

I also use a K40 magnet, on the roof, near the OEM antenna. I run the cable along the rear lift gate weather strip area, under the rear seat floor mat, and up into the center console. The coax cable easily fits in the side notch of the console. I leave it dangling inside the console when not using CB. When decide to use CB, it's the handheld Midland. I just connect the coax and plug it into the console power tap. The Midland has all the controls and guts in the handset, so there's nothing taking up the limited shelf space under the Nav screen.
