Charging with the USB ports

I have no trouble charging hand held devices though the USB port on my PC. However, I've tried doing the same with both the USB ports in the Jeep (on the radio and the top self in the console cubby). Does anyone know if and how these ports can be reconfigured to supply more current?

Mine is an RB2 unit. Neither of the ports would charge a hand-held Mud Map GPS unit. I can charge from the 12V supply with the cable supplied but it would have been so much more convienient to be able to use a USB port.
