Comparing 8.4AN to Garmin 3590LMT

Attached are two pictures of my Garmin screen beside the 2014 GC screen while approaching the Arches Nat. Park in Moab, UT.

After driving 5,000 miles across the country, the Jeep Nav system has been "acceptable". It has locked up three times but, most of the time, it provided accurate navigation. The warnings that I am "entering an area with unverified map data" is more than annoying. I believe that it causes erroneous directions in small towns, cities, and getting to and from hotels off the Interstates. Several times, rather than direct me to turn left on a road on the map to go 100 feet to a major highway, it directed me to go right and loop through other streets to end up 100 feet to my left.

The Jeep screen colors are drab and less clear than my Garmin. The 3D view is closer to a 2D view than my Garmin but generally provides more street/road detail. However, at 60 mph and navigating to a point 10 miles away, I would rather see the road further ahead. The touch screen response times are slower than my Garmin.

And the map in the 8.4" screen isn't much bigger. You could probably use some adhesive backed Velcro to stick the Garmin to the Jeep's screen.

I do like a built-in GPS. It silences the radio when announcing directions. The sound is better coming through the speakers. However, periodically, the Nav Volume, which I have set for 18, changes on it's own to much lower settings.

How have your experiences been with the Nav System?

Re: Comparing 8.4AN to Garmin 3590LMT

I have had good luck with it. I used it on a trip to NY and continue to use it locally just to test it. Except for my house, it has always taken me right to the door.

Once I set the volume with the real knob it has stayed put. But, it barely lowers the radio volume when she speaks. My MDX almost shut the radio volume off. Maybe there's a setting. I just have the nav volume up high enough, so no problem.

It does a great job of avoiding traffic. I really like how the turns show up on the screen with the speedometer.

It even understands me pretty well when I use voice to enter addresses.

So,

it seems in fact to be a Garmin Navigation (not a Harmon Kardon as a lot of people told).

Did you already tried to load some POIs (for example Radar) to it by POI loader from Garmin?

Gigi

In one of my emails with Garmin, they referred to the "Alpine GPS". The screens and behaviors do not seem like Garmin. For example, in my Garmin, the list of Favorites is listed in order of distance from current position while the Jeep is sorted alphabetically. In my Garmin, some POI lists (like cities I think) show distance from current position while the Jeep one doesn't show distance at all.

I tried to save the Jeep Favorites to a thumb drive but it didn't show the option for copying. Might be doing something wrong. I have not tried to load waypoints or POI's into the Jeep.
