Depth Measurements Factory Alpine Sub Enclosure

I know this has been debated over & over but my search of this and every other Jeep & audio forum has turned up no concrete responses. I've even emailed a salvage yard on eBay with one for sale without the actual speaker & received no response. Has anyone ever actually measured the depth (minimum & maximum - It's an angled enclosure) of the factory subwoofer enclosure at the speaker opening. I've heard many assumptions (read all the responses on here after hours of searching) anywhere from 3.5" to 5". I've never heard any confirmed measurements however. I'm going to try an extensive modification of the box but would like to order my replacement 8" prior to ripping the car apart. It's my daily driver. Does anyone have one sitting around they can measure? Thanks!

Re: Depth Measurements Factory Alpine Sub Enclosure - Install Update

Ok, I'm going to reply to my own post out of information discovered during my install. The actual depth of the factory Alpine subwoofer box is 3.75 inches at center (careful going that deep if your sub is vented at the back of the magnet). You can gain an extra half inch by cutting out the back mounting point for the factory subwoofer. For those that are not aware there is bolt securing the back of the factory subwoofer to the back of the enclosure and there is an indentation on the back of the enclosure. I've attached a measurement photo below.

I installed a Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-8 (Shallow mount DVC 2 ohm). I used two cans of truck bed spray on the outside of the enclosure and then coated the entire inside with sound proofing mat (off brand Dynamat from my local Fosgate dealer). I'm using the factory amp and it sounds terrific. Plays very loud and is much more musical now. The enclosure is so much thicker and heavier now. The sensitivity of the sub does not seem to matter as the sub is now every bit as easy to hear as the fronts. The RF hits very hard and much lower. Because of this I do now have some rattling in the door panel up front which was not present before. I'll fix that when I install the Focals in a few weeks. The only thing I had to adjust for were the mounting holes on the Fosgate (which happens to have almost endless options) would not match up to all the factory holes. So I matted over the mounting area and drilled a few new holes as necessary.

Fun and relatively easy project that cost less than $200 total. There were zero air volume issues with the enclosure either given the RF's limited specs. My dealer said I would have no problems and I didn't.

Depth Measurements Factory Alpine Sub Enclosure

Do you have any pictures of the new sub installed and how you sprayed the box? Ive been looking at a pioneer 8" shallow mount sub that is also a 2ohm DVC. Just haven't pulled the trigger.

I know a lot of guys here are not happy with the stock sub, but for me its tolerable. It can get a little out of control and over zealous on certain songs, but overall I'm ok with it. I have read posts where dynamat was applied to the OE enclosure. I may try this out first and see what happens. I bet it would help tremendously and get the OE sub under control.

I appreciate your writeup... thanks!
