Differences with 2014 and 2015 8.4AN

I have read that there are hardware differences with the 2014 and 2015 8.4AN units. Does anyone have any details on what the differences are?

Where did you read that? I was under the impression that they are the exact same.

Re: Differences with 2014 and 2015 8.4AN

there's enough differences that they use different versions of the software that are incompatible. (see the thread about the Rax jailbreak - customtronix hacks the stock software and they found this out)

apparently it's relatively easy to take 'em apart and there are no warranty stickers or tell tales. So if someone was adventurous they could rip 'em apart and find some part numbers...

The 2015 units also have selectable themes for the display in the settings menu. The 2015 unit could also possibly be linked to the ECO mode memory on the 2015's so the car remembers the setting you last had for eco mode on or off and doesn't default to on always like the 2014's.

I'd assume both those things are software and could be done on the 2014's. So dont think the hardware differences would matter.

For example- the software on the 14's already have piles of themes in the software. If you hard boot it will default to the SRT theme. Then apparently it checks something and finds out what brand theme to use and flips to Jeep, Dodge, freightliner, maserati, etc.

The '15 radio probably doesn't have any other physical connection to whatever module controls eco mode- it's probably all over the can bus (as there's a third party lockpick type device that you can get which will also "remember" to keep the eco off. (just a guess- but i assume the add on keeps the setting in it's memory when you shut the vehicle down and then at start checks the add on's setting and then sends the appropriate command over can-bus to set the vehicle setting how you want)

Yup, this is about the extent of what we know. Perhaps Magnus (from Customtronix) might be able to tell us more at some point. But at any rate, I doubt the changes are drastic or significant. If anything, tweaks to fix limitations found by the engineers in the 2014 setup.

My hope was that the changes ensured that the 2015 models would be backward compatible with Android Auto and Carplay via firmware update. But now I think that is just wishful thinking on my part.

Greetings,

I beginning to believe that as well. Even though I do not have the uConnect, I did have the opportunity to catch a demo of the 2015. My feeling now is before Android Auto or CarPlay debuts on a uConnect system, Fiat/Chrysler want to get the most out of their investment in establishing the uConnect system.

This could very well mean that any improvements in the 2016 units will come on the hardware side to compete against the competition such as MB, Volvo just to name a few. If look at Volvo's XC-90, they have a top of line system and enhanced display that puts the 8.4 and the HK/Alpine to shame. On the flip side, the Volvo can not perform in the same classification as a Jeep.

If you look at this at corporate perspective, you spend money on major items, save on stuff that you consider minor and market the product in such a way to get a premium price on your return. Thus Fiat/Chrysler gets back the revenue it had before spending on the investments and mergers. Cash on the balance sheets is a big thing.

Basically the uConnect is for a more general open audience that is perfect for them. Those of use that want more tech and better sound are in this small niche. For us in the niche to conquer the 2014+ models problem, we rely on the aftermarket integration electronics such as the lock pick devices, wifi interfaces and DSP to clean up the sound, etc....

Best for now.

Re: Differences with 2014 and 2015 8.4AN

Interesting perspective and I definitely think you are on point about them maximizing the return on the uConnect investment. Implementing a shared platform across a variety of vehicle models as opposed to a point solution for just JGC for example allows them to reach economies of scale and a return quicker.

I will be curious on if they can/will enable Apple Car or Android Auto on the uConnect hardware. My guess would be no as that would be one less reason for someone to want the new model year vehicle! They could have made small hardware changes that would allow these other operating systems to run so they can do testing on the same hardware in current MY. This would also allow a longer hardware platform road map as they can use the same HW but put different software each MY to add capability/shiny new features that we all want.

Greetings,

The point solution for the Jeep audio was suppose to be in the Summit and SRT using the HK.

They could have enhanced the 8.4 to bring it up to what the competition has to offer. For example, LandRover has option for navigation by allowing you to use your smartphone with the Sygic offline navi app instead for the built-in navi. This allows you to have the latest software features, updates and constant map database updates as well.

The sound quality on the HK gets mixed reviews here on the forum. The truth of the matter believe or not, the European based HK vehicles, the sound is an improvement but not that much over the Jeep HK system. As with any car audio system, their is a niche that prefers to have better quality sound and this is true in the HK, Audi, etc.... I have seen various custom upgrades over the years for them.

In my pervious post within this thread, I used Volvo as the example. The speakers and amps are from B&W and do not remember who does the electronics from the. At the last NYICS this past spring, I got to hear the demo unit and it was in a total different league for an Original Equipment piece.

With regards to the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (my camp & not going over to the dark side seeingwhite ), as I posted in the CarPlay thread, my feeling is everybody is setting on the sidelines while Pioneer and Alpine work out the issues with the apps and hardware interconnectivity. Time will tell. And to date, I am still cautious before I make a move.

Best for now.

BTW, even through I am longtime and suffering Met Fan, the summer of 2013 I did catch a game out in Tuner field. Very impressed with the stadium and I did take the tour which is great.

FWIW, I got confirmation from Magnus (developer of the lockpick) that the 2015 AN is:

"100% same hardware just different software.. there´s no airplay or anything sexy in the new software"

Oh well.

and the plot thickens. I wonder why he initially couldn't get the '14 software to work on it. I wonder if they figured out his exploit for the 14's and so they 'fixed' it and he had to come up with something different for the 15's...

Greetings,

Your conclusions here could be very well be correct. Protecting proprietary interests is not uncommon in the software industry. It has been done time and time over many years. From Apple to CPM to IBM to Unisys and etc.....

Think about this scenario, Fiat/Chrysler got great reviews since 2011 about the uConnect. Now they are living off that recognition and zone in with their own concept on what a car audio system should be. Somehow, it seams they lost the reality or they do not care about a certain percentage of a user base needs.

Therefore, IMHO, I have to agree with you.

So based upon fellow members reporting in, we know for the 2015 the software is changed to protect uConnect and the hardware is the same with a below standard CPU for the processing power. Thank heaven that I do not buy a vehicle based upon the audio system. If that was the case the competition is miles ahead. Back in the day, Chrysler was the easiest system for an aftermarket change over.

Best for now.
