Since there is a door speaker and tweeter for both the left and right, do you know if one of these was full frequency they tapped into to feed the amp and hence your new components, or did they need to sum the tweeter and door speaker outputs to get a full frequency output? Mainly, I'm wondering if the stock amp has active high pass filters for the tweeters and active low pass filters for the door speakers or if it's just full frequency to both an the stock tweeter has a capacitor on it for a passive high pass filter.

Also curious if the stock amp has any timing delays built in for the different speakers. I may eventually have to use a RTA to get an answer to these questions.

Voyager, a single line output from the new amp went into the new front components, the focals have their own crossovers to the tweets. I'm pretty sure stock also bridged the front components, but there is considerably weaker wattage.

Thanks! That would help a ton if the front speakers were one channel on the stock amp. Sometime this summer I'll be doing this as well. Focals seem like a good choice for speakers. Thanks again for sharing.

Voyager, I had hoped just switching out the stock OEM speakers, even though they are Alpine, would have been enough. Certainly, even the "entry" level Focals are a huge upgrade, especially for the primary front components..

That said though, the stock amp just can't drive that many outputs, or bridged outputs. Meanwhile, the stock sub, and especially the sub enclosure are just poor execution in what otherwise is an ideal sub location.

I tried dropping a higher powered 8 inch sub into the stock mount and it ended up giving a reverberated double bass hit which was horrible.

So we ended up going a similar route as Kwak above with a custom sub mount and 10" that does it nicely.

YMMV, but this thing kicks arse cleanly now even at speed with the windows down and roof open.

Re: Do Not Try This at Home

Moose.. you put in two amps as well? One for sub and one for new front doors? Or did you just hook up the sub to the stock wiring and ran the fronts off the new amp? Trying to see if i can put in a stealth box without the addition of a new amp if thats what you did?

Also did the Kenwood get put in the OEM housing or made a custom enclosure? Thanks moose.

Re: Do Not Try This at Home

The JL Stealthbox will require a dedicated amp. It requires 500 watts to get really clean sound.
The stock amp is really not a clean sounding unit. When you drop $$$$ on the JL, please get a amp!!!!!

Re: Do Not Try This at Home

Jorde, see my post #40, agree with Kwak, a good sub will need more juice. The single amp I used has 4 dedicated 75 watt RMS channels for the door speakers, and another mono sub channel rated at 300 watts RMS.

Perhaps more importantly, the stock sub enclosure is a plastic bedpan by Chrysler and it distorts any properly powered sub as it flexes and reverberates. Gotta get that thing outta there and replace it with a solid sub box. Edited first post with more photos.

Re: Do Not Try This at Home

Moose have you had it relocated to the rear passenger under seat without folding issues? Did they secure the amp to the floor or it just sits there? I dont see how an amp fits in there! Its so tight. I can't find any good spots that I necessary "like". The Jeep is so big yet there really is so little space to mount a small 10x8x3 amp.

Re: Do Not Try This at Home

^J, have not relocated it yet, but when you fold the seat backs down the seat bottom shifts forward and down a bit hitting the amp we put below the center seat. It appears there may be room on either passenger or drivers side rear seat, just haven't gotten to it yet. Note the Alpine PDX5 I'm using is really compact so many other amps may not fit at all, not sure.

Re: Do Not Try This at Home

love this ride, Moose...just made decision yesterday to do away with my spare tire, my amps are gonna live in there. i do very much agree that there is not much room under the seats or in the rear cavities, and i had my installer take the jeep apart for about 2 hours trying to find spots...in the end, although new info came out that JL does have a stealthbox (good news) that will live in the rear passenger cavity, i decided to get rid of the tire...i use AAA and drive 98% of the time in a 50 sq mile radius...and those Audison Amps and BitOne controllers are too big to hide elsewhere...my wife is literally going to go nutz, love it...i have issues...

It's gonna be OK man, you are not alone. Carry on.

Some might call it crazy you dropping a critical safety item for more powerful audio, but from my perspective that's a + rep.
