Does the 730N have a GPS speedometer?

I have a 2012 Overland. Almost every GPS unit I've seen has a mode where it displays your current speed, calculated by the GPS receiver. Does the 730N have such a screen?

Re: Does the 730N have a GPS speedometer?

Is there a way to upgrade the GPS to get the speed indicator in the 730N?

The thing that made me put my Garmin 60CSx back in the Jeep was when I found I couldn't do that. I was stopped by a police officer who said I was speeding and I said I wasn't. My Garmin has tracks where I could go back and see how fast I was going at certain areas. The RHR was lacking. I was sad. Ever since then the Garmin stays on whenever I drive.

Re: Does the 730N have a GPS speedometer?

Garmin added the speed display feature several years ago, most other makes have since added it as it is a useful feature for some. The thing I miss with the 730N is a speed limit display for the road. I also don't like that it avoids secondary road like the plague and you can't upload routes and way points (as well as POIs). The 730N GPS is by Harmon. Harmon used to try to sell portable GPSs but had to get out of the business a couple years ago due to poor sales (brought on by poor performance). If the 430N had dead reckoning there would be no discussion about which OEM radio is a better GPS.

I have yet to see an OEM navigation system that displays your speed and I have been in and driven many 2012 vehicles and some high end. So I assume your speaking of just the dash or windshield mount units that do this. Either way I would imagine an OEM unit doesnt do this especially considering your speed is displayed right in front of you twice (digitally and analog) on the Overland. No reason to show your speed three times.

Re: Does the 730N have a GPS speedometer?

I think avalys is referencing the 430n Navigation system which is Garmin- in that case it does tell you your speed. I have the 430n system with the Nav and that screen gives your some other interesting information as well.

Re: Does the 730N have a GPS speedometer?

Don't know if this changed for 2012. But my portable Garmin did so I looked. On my 430N, when viewing the map, posted speed is in bottom right. Next to it is my speed. One mile over posted and my speed turns to red.

I didn't mean the speed indicator, I meant to ask about the speed limit sign or the posted speed limit like the Garmin 255WT (and newer models). I think I got the answer, but I wish there was a way besides using my old stand alone garmin on trips again.

Re: Does the 730N have a GPS speedometer?

Not trying to be sexist, but over the years I found women like the Garmin interface but men often think it is cartoonish. There is no question the Garmin software produces good results, however. Certainly not perfect. My spouse was lead to a dead end in Atlanta yesterday trying to find her way to the airport. GPS told her to drive right through the chain link fence. Her GPS has the latest 2012 vintage maps.
