Downsides to LockPick

Hello,

I have heard that the LockPick is easy to install, it works great with streaming, etc. I am about to pull the trigger solely to enter address while the vehicle is moving. Before I do that, I was really hoping to rely on you guys and your experience to let me know what downsides you all have found to having the LockPick on your 730N Nav. Thank you!

Re: Downsides to LockPick

My biggest complaint about it is that it washed out the video from the backup cam considerably. It might have been the unit I had, as it died about two months after installation and decided I didn't want to bother replacing it with another one. This was just my experience with it hooked up to a 430N.

Re: Downsides to LockPick

I've had mine for a year, bought off ebay with no problems. I don't have a backup camera but it works with in motion nav and if you have a MYGIG ... DVDs in motion are great, too. I didn't hook up the multimedia kit that comes with it, I just use the HDD for my music files.

At this point, if it craps out, I'd buy a new one because I've enjoyed it that much

Re: Downsides to LockPick

I'm wondering the same as Big Green. I'm watching the video from Coastaltech right now and have to wonder why if there are no drawbacks you would ever want to disable the "Auto OVR" or double click the volume knob to manually do it? Just wondering.

Is anything not operational when it is overriding the Nav?

Also, I see the CHR550 has a rear camera input. It also includes that function with it's menus on screen. Does it take the backup cam function away from the factory unit? Is the factory cam then routed through the CHR550? Is that why Hemidog's is overly bright?

Re: Downsides to LockPick

I just had a CHR550 installed about an hour ago into my 2012 Overland with the 730 RHR.

From what I've seen so far, there is no degredation of the factory back-up cam resolution. I can confirm that the factory rear cam is viewable while in motion, and the installer did not have to run a dedicated 12v power for it to operate. DVD plays while in motion, and (in motion) control of Nav is the same as if gear selector was in park.

I connected my iPad2 quickly, and audio/video play as you would expect - with album art.

I can't see any downsides yet - everything is performing as promised. I'll update in a few days once I've had some time with it, but so far, this is 100%.

Re: Downsides to LockPick

I think any NAV feature that uses vehicle speed will not work well, as the radio will always think the vehicle is at 0mph. I'm not sure if the 730N uses vehicle speed for anything other than dead reckoning perhaps, so nav in tunnels may be an issue. The 430N learns diver behavior and uses it to more accurately predict time of arrival. You may want to check if the radio display current speed. I think the 430N uses vehicle speed to fill in when sat signal is lost (for a short period anyway). Of course if watching DVDs, or the fella behind you, while in motion is more important than Nav performance, that won't be an issue.

Re: Downsides to LockPick

I've got the v4 Lockpick on my 730N and have had very, very intermittent issues. After I first installed it, I had to go back in and make sure the harnesses were securely connected b/c it stopped working. After that, it would still occasionally flake out and not work (but the radio still worked). I never considered these issues to be so troublesome that I wanted to uninstall the Lockpick. I've never noticed it causing any issues with the stock functionality (though the point about dead reckoning makes sense, I just don't drive through tunnels very often so can't say what impact that might have).

Last week I upgraded the Lockpick to the latest software which is supposed to address stability issues and I haven't had any problems since. I also connected an iPod/iPhone/iPad cable to the AUX A/V jacks and can now use it to watch ESPN streams of sporting events while I'm on the road. Since I've done that, I have an even greater appreciation for the Lockpick. Overall, I say it's a no-brainer...

Re: Downsides to LockPick

Quick update from my first post:

I originally indicated that there was no degredation of the back-up cam quality after the install. This is still true, UNTIL the dedicated iPod cable is in use; then, it is very washed out.

I connected my iPad2 yesterday to test out the Netflix streaming (perfect BTW) and noticed the problem almost immediately.

Not sure if anyone has found a cure for this, or if it is just something we're stuck with?

Were you streaming video to the headunit then switched to R which swapped the ipad video to backup cam video?

I havent noticed any issues with the backup cam washing out and we have videos streaming from our iphones to the rear monitors all the time for the kids.

I'll test when I get home.

My only gripe is that it's a hair too complicated for my non-tech-savvy wife to navigate through. I've received panic calls from her trying to figure out how to get the video back up on the rear monitors. I wish there were a way I could disable the unneeded features and create one button macros.

Yes - streaming Netflix from iPod then putting the gear selector in reverse = poor video quality on the factory back-up cam.

I spoke to the guys at Coastal, and they want me to pull the box out and then call them for a fix. I'm going to have to clip/redirect a couple of wires so that the factory cam does not go through the 550.

Guys at Coastal have been very responsive and easy to deal with.

Please, details when you get them. Also, the results of the "fix". The "washed-out" camera is the only thing holding me back from buying this.
