Unhappy European/U.S. map set for 430N or 730N issue

Still holding on my WK2-- have been mostly convinced to go for the 2012. But there is one big nagging thing-- navigation. I'm over in Europe, but purchasing through the military here, so we get the American version.

Frustrating thing on the navigation, when you get the American one, it comes with the North American maps, not European ones. I was told by our dealer here that the only option is to switch out the entire head unit--naturally, for the full price of a new 430 or 730.

Does anyone know if that is really the case? Or is there some other option-- for either one of the models-- which would allow for trade-out of the maps, or addition? (Unless I'm really mistaken, I presume the maps are loaded on the HDD anyway, so it's even more than doubly crazy to have the only reported option be one costing 2 grand!) I don't really feel like buying something now that I can't use, or not being able to use it when I go back to the states.

For about $200 you can buy equivalent standalone Garmin unit with European maps (or option to get European maps, I am not up to date on current models). I think this is your best bet. I have Garmin 1450 and software is almost same as on 430N.
