Re: Factory Speaker Impedance

True value...possible. I will measure some tonight to show the difference of 4ohm vs. 2ohm. I will take some pics. In the meantime, check out madisound and parts express. Look at the resistance in relation to the nom. Impedance.

Re: Factory Speaker Impedance

Ok, fair enough but I am a (UK) degree qualified electroincs engineer of some 30 years experience, 10 years of which were spent in car audio design and installation. I've had a passion for domestic and PA loudspeaker design since I was a teen (I'm now in my 50's!!). Not professing to know everything about the subject by a long way but I have done a lot of measurements of car audio systems - and with the correct equipment. I had a look at the Madisound web site but can't find any useful information on there. Any chance of a link?

Re: Factory Speaker Impedance

Go into the speaker store. Start looking at driver spec sheets. You will see Resistance value in relation to nom. Impedance. I will post some links for popular diy drivers we use in car audio when I get on laptop.

Re: Factory Speaker Impedance

Your highend manufacturers tend to be 8ohm drivers. Might be difficult to find anything in 4ohm let alone 2ohm.

Re: Factory Speaker Impedance

In looking at the Infinity 2ohm collection, they measure around 2.2-2.3. Like I said, I'm more than confident that the Alpine system has 2 ohm 6x9's and DVC 2 ohm sub.

The question becomes, is the amp rated the same 2ohm vs. 4ohm. I would say yes, just based on the fact that OEMs like to use 2 ohm drivers.

Re: Factory Speaker Impedance

I just checked the JL Audio 3 ohm series drivers. They measure from 2.4 up to 2.7 depending on driver.
The TW series 2 ohm measures at 2.1 DC resistance.

Re: Factory Speaker Impedance

Hey folks. How is everyone! Lots of useful info here. Made me sign up.

I bought a 2015 JGC in Feb. Laredo E. It had the base six speaker system in it. That was severely lacking in the quality and power department. You get what you pay for I guess.

What I've done.
Alpine KTP 445U 45x4 power pack amp.
Kenwood KFC-6985PS 6x9's for the front doors.
Kenwood KFC-1665S 6 1/2 for the rear doors.
Kenwood KFC ST01 tweeters for the upper front doors.

This alone improved the power and sound quality of the RA2 head unit 10 fold. It's sounds astounding.

Now I want a subwoofer. So I purchased this:
2011 2012 2013 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Subwoofer | eBay

The one I received had a tag on it saying pulled from 2012 Grand Cherokee.
Can anyone tell me, what is the correct impedance and power handling of this factory sub? Its dual voice coil. I tried to measure the resistance but I think my ohm meter has issues.

I'm looking to buy a small low profile subwoofer amp to power it.
Worse case scenario and if the sub sounds insufficient, I'll replace the 8" sub with a low profile aftermarket sub into the same enclosure.

Any help is appreciated and thanks for your time here guys/gals.

-Anthony

Re: Factory Speaker Impedance

Greetings and welcome,

The factory dual voice coil sub woofer from the Alpine system is rated at 2 ohm. The wattage is not specified anywhere that is know. In fact, I am not sure if the 506 total for that is RMS or Peak. My guess back then was 125 RMS because when you look at the other drivers you find them to be really cheap.

I have yet to come across that answer. Therefore do not go crazy with getting a high power amp. But do stay with a Class D, it is better efficiency on the electrical system of JGC.

Best for now.

Re: Factory Speaker Impedance

Ok, thanks very much. I will stick with Class D. And a new ohm meter today as well.

I was looking at this:
Alpine KTP-190U Power Pack Compact mono subwoofer amplifier — 90 watts RMS x 1 at 1 ohm at Crutchfield.com

It packs 60W RMS at a 2ohm load and small enough to hide away behind the RR 1/4 panel trim panel, out of sight.

I'm not looking for tailgate shaking subwoofer power. Just a nice, low thump to accent the beautiful sound I'm getting now.

Have a great day!

Greetings,

The factory sub does not have a large magnate, so you should be fine.

Keep us updated.

Best for now.
