First mod radar detector

This is my first mod it took a hour to find a wire that lost 12v when turning the truck off but I found one and maybe this will help anyone else it's under the driver carpet at the firewall. One of the red wires. Here's my install.

Re: First mod radar detector

The left panel by the pillar pops off. It's kind of hard but it will I took a flathead screwdriver and put a rag under it so it wouldn't damage the side of dash. Pry and it pops off. In that side panel I mounted a cigarette adapter female with fuse so I could plug the radar into it.

Re: First mod radar detector

I think that's a very poor location to mount a radar detector.

Radar Detector Mounting - Guys of LIDAR

Way to close to the hood. Cooks in the sun, easily spotted by a police officer in the event you get pulled over. It's also not going to aim straight ahead. The strongest range is dead ahead.

Re: First mod radar detector

Your dead wrong have had that radar detector for 4 years now in every vehicle I've owned all in the same location and got me out of every speed trap. Also wrong about the sun. It still works perfect to this day. Maybe you buy crappy radar detectors. Also a police officer shoots the gun at the bumper not the windshield, and at a distance there is such a wide shot. Also it looks cleaner in the corner not a stupid rear view mirror mount clunky.

Re: First mod radar detector

Read the link. Those guys buy radar guns just for the fun of it.

I have two Escort 9500ix's

Your radar will still work, but not work as well. About the worst place you could put it.

P. S. They don't aim Radar at any point on your car. They do with laser, they aim at your plate or headlights. But laser detection is almost useless. Only way to protect from that is a jammer. Higher is better for radar.

Re: First mod radar detector

^ What he said. I have a 9500i mounted above my rear view mirror, and the wife runs a Solo S2 mounted in the same location. Mine is hardwired (stealth - but I still remove it).

Re: First mod radar detector

What's the best spot to get power from if I want to hardwire my Escort X50 detector up high and center? Is there a good place to tie into and is it easily accessed? I've been wanting to ditch the stupid coiled cord for some time.

Re: First mod radar detector

I had to hard wire my detector by using Invisicord and tap in to the auto dimmer mirror. I used a dremel to sand down the connector to fit into the harness.

Only place I could find power was to the Mirror too. I don't have a sunroof though, there might be power there.

I posted about it a good while ago (last August). Probably can find it searching for 9500ix.

Someone else posted their install too and found the same wire and had a good description of how to get Mirror Down and back up (which is a little tricky, kind of a non-intuitive puzzle ).
