First post and a Canadian 430N question.

Hello all! After 11 years of Land Rovers I am back in the Jeep fold. The new Grand Cherokee offered just the right combination of off road capabilities and on road comfort and utility at a price too attractive to ignore.

When I presented my dealer with the list of required options he managed to locate just three which fit the bill - one in white, one in black and one in red. Since the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned was a red 1992 Cherokee, I chose the Inferno WK2 in the belief that all red Jeeps are as bullet proof as my first (I am thoroughly convinced that colour is the most important consideration when it comes to vehicle reliability).

As all first posts require pics, here without further ado is the new baby!

My question is this: Since the Sirius Travel service is not offered in Canada, is there any good reason to install the Travel Link Update in my 430N? I have seen a couple of posts which indicate faster boot times, and examining the install package I see a Garmin update file and what appears to be a couple of CPU update files. Are there any Canadians out there who have installed this update? Have you noticed any difference?

The potential downside to installing the update is having an "unsupported" (in Canada) software revision and potential grief from my dealer should I ever need service for the 430N. After all, a CD image downloaded from the Internet and some unsubstantiated anecdotal reports of decreased boot times are hardly compelling evidence. I have my dealer's opinion, what is yours?

On another note, I see that the RHB update is not just for Chrysler products - the install package also includes background images for Lancia, Fiat and VW as well. If I do end up installing this package I am tempted to play with the image names so that the Fiat logos get installed. Perhaps that is that too much sacrilege? Has anyone made custom images?

I will close off with a heartfelt "Thank You" to the operators of this site and the knowledgeable participants of the forum for making this such a great Jeep resource.

If you dealer ever calls you on it, feign ignorance and say that it came that way from the factory.

Re: First post and a Canadian 430N question.

Nice looking new Jeep, just in time for the good weather!

As for the 430N update, since I also would not be able to use Travel Link, I have not yet installed the update. I have no major boot time problem. The only delay that sometimes bugs me is the reloadng of iPod info from a recently re-synced iPod. It can take a couple of minutes the first time it is hooked into the 430N; but them only seconds on restarts after the first time.

I wonder if the update allows the first iPod sync to complete faster? Anyone? Beuller?

Re: First post and a Canadian 430N question.

I'm from Canada and inputed the update I'm ny jeep as soon as it came out on this jeepgarage. I have no problems at all and everything works fine. If your debating on installing the update just ask yourself isn't it better to always have the most recent software on your radio? (Of course only if it does not create problems) which it dose not ! I emailed sirus radio and they told me that ford and chrysler will have travel link up and running for 2012 . I don't know if that means 2012 vehicles or the year 2012.

Re: First post and a Canadian 430N question.

Same experience here... I was on the fence but decided to install the update. Everything went smoothly and I am happy I went ahead with it. Even if you do not use travel link it is still installing nav system updates as well as the radio software and the flash software used to drive the display. Can't think of any reasons not to upgrade!

Re: First post and a Canadian 430N question.

After I took delivery of my new 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland in Calgary just before Christmas 2010. I called Sirius Canada and inquired about the Travel Link feature. I was told that the Travel Link service was a feature offered by the XM side of the house and the Competition Bureau in Canada had not given it's blessing to the merger of Sirius and XM in Canada. However, I see from Sirius Canada's web site that the Competition Bureau has given notice that it will not appose the merger in Canada. I called Sirius Canada back and they confirmed that the merger should be complete by late June. They also confirmed that Travel Link will be offered, though they have no pricing info at this time.

The update to which you refer deals with a problem in the Media Center 430N software that prevents it from accessing Travel Link even though it is available to US subscribers.

Re: First post and a Canadian 430N question.

Gentlemen, thank you for your input. While I am still unsure whether the upgrade will be of any benefit right now, it appears that it will do no harm either. I will install the software. If I get the time I will measure things like boot time and iPod reading time before and after the upgrade to see if there is any real difference.

GraphicConverter will allow me to edit the .dat image files and I think I will have some fun with a couple of custom images before I install. I was thinking of something like the Fiat badge with the word "Fiat" removed and "Jeep" inserted instead. Or maybe a radiation warning symbol to amuse the passengers. I'll have to think about it.

Any further news about this? I have the CD burned but wondering if there is any user-difference other than Travel Link (which I can't use yet).

Re: First post and a Canadian 430N question.

The best thing about the upgrade is an enhanced ability to navigate your iPod contents. Prior to the upgrade you could only type in the first letter of a category, and then manually scroll through all the selections which started with that letter. Now you can type in an entire name and it will go directly there. For an iPod user with a large collection of music, the upgrade is worth it for this feature alone.

By my measurements, the GPS cold boot time (from an overnight shutdown to a fully drawn map) after the upgrade was ~2.5 seconds quicker - no big deal. The problem is that the boot time in general is inconsistent and my measurements may not be meaningful.

My attempts to measure the iPod reading time were stymied by my wife's untimely addition of a couple of gigs worth of new music to the iPod. I can't say that I have noticed any appreciable difference, though.

All in all, speed of booting and iPod reading seem not significantly affected by the upgrade (on my system with my configuration in my area - YMMV). The iPod navigation upgrade IS significant, if you are using an iPod. Of course, if Sirius Canada and the CRTC ever makes the Travel Link broadcast available to us then the upgrade will certainly be important. I don't hold out much hope that that will occur anytime soon, or that useful data will include much more than the GTA and Vancouver to begin with. We can always hope.

While not essential, I do recommend the upgrade to Canadian users.

Re: First post and a Canadian 430N question.

Sharptail,

Thanks again for your post. I have now done the installation and it went fine -- just took a bit longer to run than the installation instructions said, as others have also noted. All ran to completion with the correct messages onscreen.

I like the fact that now the NAV soft button has a bit of colour on the screen, not just the old blue tones.

iPod does seem slightly faster to boot and the maps also feel just a bit snappier. Nothing major, but certainly OK.

BUT, the thing you mention in your first paragraph about being able to search for an iPod category using more than one letter has me stymied. When I am playing by song or artist for example and I go to use the A-Z buttons to search for a new one, I still get to select only the first letter. Then I still have to scroll down from the top of the list to the selection I want (which may be several screens down). How do I get to type more than one letter before the search happens?

Maybe, I have misinterpreted what you described, but any help would be appreciated.

Re: First post and a Canadian 430N question.

Cherodude, I think I have to eat some crow. When I first installed the software, I went to the artists menu and typed in "Bob", and hit "go". Up came Bob Dylan, the artist I was looking for. It did not occur to me that Bob Dylan was the first artist in my "B" list (followed by Brand X). I jumped to the conclusion that this function now worked the way I was hoping it would from the beginning.

Well, I was wrong in this assumption. The software still jumps to the beginning of the alphabetical list of the last letter you type. B is the last letter of Bob, and Bob Dylan is the first artist in my B list. I cannot go directly to Brand X, much to my chagrin.

I apologize for any confusion I have caused, and should have tested further before I posted. By assuming, I have made an ass out of myself - something I am not fond of doing. I am sorry.

I still believe that the upgrade is worth installing, even for those who cannot get the Travel Link feature.

No prob. Thanks for clearing that up. We can hope such a feature gets added someday.

Meanwhile, I have no issues with the update. Hoping that Travel Link becomes a feature for Canadian subscribers in future.
