Focal 165 v30 - Installed in 2014 Overland

Spent some time this weekend installing a set of Focal 165 v30's in my Jeep. The stock system was way to muddy and I couldn't take it. After 5 days of commuting to work, I had enough and picked up some Focals for the front. This is only stage one of my audio upgrade, but it has already made a HUGE difference. Yes it is running off the stock amp, and they are under powered, but they sounds 100x better than the stock system. They are running off of the stock systems crossovers and not the Focal crossovers. The high's are a little bright but it definitely suffices for now.

I plan on putting some coaxial speakers in the rear doors. In talking with a few people, their thoughts are the tweeters in the trunk pillars seem to distort the sound, and are unnecessary. Has anyone heard the same? Or put coaxial's in the rear and been happy with them?

I also plan on adding a JL Audi 900/5 amp to power the system. When the amp is in i'll add the Focal crossovers which should bring the brightness on the highs down alittle. Also need to add a different sub... Would like to figure out how to get a W6 in a stealth box, but seems like i may be stuck with the W3.

Nice. I went with the xd700/5 and wish I got the 900/5 instead. If you plan on adding an amp change the Headunit first. I added the Lc7i first because I really wanted to keep my factory mygig, it had everything i wanted. Problem is the factory signals that feed the amp aren't very good so you're just amplifying that. I returned the LOC and got an aftermarket Headunit and the difference is unreal! Definitely save for the Headunit first.

Oh and as far as the rear pillar speakers, I found them and the center dash one to be very overpowering. Don't have them connected to the amp just the Headunit but still made my highs very bright. I disconnected the center speaker and turned the amp up higher just so I hear the aftermarket door speakers more than the factory ones. I kinda like the surround effect but love the sound of the amplified ones better. Oh and I have hertz HSK's front and back by the way...

Not sure how you can replace the factory headunit on one of the WK2s for 2014... Thought the only option in the interior was the Uconnect screen/etc....

However... I highly recommend an Audison Bit 1 or Bit 10...fixes everything.

Put one of those in my 2011 Superduty XLT with 4 Focals and 1 JL Sub driven off the 700/5 amp...made it a brand new truck even with the stock headunit. Sold the truck this January as I'm currently in a country that I can't drive for a year... but the stereo components...they're in my garage...waiting for the next vehicle.

Have you figured out how you are going to get the signal from the radio to the amp and then to the correct speaker? Will the Audison Bit 1 or 10 fix that problem? From what I've read, that is supposed to be the hard part about upgrading the 14's system. I honestly haven't looked into it too much, so that could have been early speculation. Please keep us updated on the stages because I'll be watching this closely. I have two 12" subs in boxes and amp just sitting in my garage...

Yeah i'm still working on that. Like leks66 said above you can either get a converter or replace the headunit. I'm 100% against changing the head unit so I'm going to find a converter to dumb down the signal from the alpine amp and then run it into the new amp to send out. I've seen a couple options but don't have experience with any. Will keep this updated once I figure out what to use. I'm sure someone on here must have found something.....

Will look into the Audisons for sure! Thanks Richx76

Re: Focal 165 v30 - Installed in 2014 Overland

Based on my experience... The Audison equipment is better than any of the items on Crutchfield or a Line-Output Converter. Here's why:

It takes any signal...Digital or Analog...converts it to Digital...allows full Digital Signal Processing for Phase/Time Sequencing/Distance Matching/Frequency Splitting/the list goes on... and then sends that signal out to your amp. They're not cheap...and professional install is an exceptional idea...but the sound quality is amazing. The integration, if done right, is flawless.

Audison bit

Nothing else I've "heard" sounds this good.

Picture one of the crappiest sounding stock stereos... It's the Ford F-250 Crew Cab XLT (think 1 notch up from the worst options package ever).

An audison Bit 10 D, 4 Coaxial speakers, 1 JL box (not even a big one) and a JL 700/5 amp. Sounded like the concert hall I spent $$$$ on to make my BMW have proper staging/sound depth and clarity. For significantly less.

(disclosure...i'm not an installer...not a dealer...just make airplanes fly...)

And actually, my concern is that I'll have to do all this work again on a 2014 JGC when I do finally order one this fall.

Oh ok. Best of luck. Please keep us updated as I would like to know for future reference. Wish I could have kept my factory Headunit, but also love my alpine one. Never looked into the audison processor. Also some pics would be nice

If you're able to, pull the tweeters out and put either a 2.2uF or 4.7uF capacitor on the positive leads, it will take care of your brightness issue for a few bucks. The factory Alpine tweets have a 2.2uF cap built into them FYI. I did this yesterday and made a world of difference after I'd just upgraded my fronts.
