I installed the Focal 6x9 component set in my front doors, and the complimentary Focal 6.75s in my rear doors, a few days ago. Yes, the Focal tweeters are "bright", but they certainly don't "make my ears bleed". Since I tend to listen primarily to "classic rock", whose format has been "re-mastered" dozens of times over, I do notice distinct differences between songs, as well as voices, when the disc jockey cuts in, but it's not objectionable. I like to refer to the higher frequencies as "detailed".

Keep in mind, you're comparing the "high end" Focal speakers to the $1.99 OE speakers, with their "muddy" sound......

Did you compare what you installed to other brands?

No,meaning before your installation did you go to various shops to listen to other speaker choices before making your final purchase/decision.

No. Despite the fact that I live in a fairly well populated, metropolitan area, there aren't all that many shops that deal in car stereo, any more. There were more shops around here in the 80s and 90s. Secondly, many of the shops that are still in business, in this area, sell the mainstream brands, such as Alpine, Kenwood, JL Audio, and Pioneer. None of those lines have a 6x9 component set, for the GC's front doors. Secondly, I'd feel funny if I "auditioned" speakers at a local shop, then bought them online. As we all know, most local shops tend to sell at full retail price.

Also, I don't like the idea of some stranger tearing into my vehicles, any of them. I've seen some supposed "professionals" do some pretty marginal work, and since my GC is only 8 months old, I don't want someone doing something that could potentially void my factory warranty.

Finally, since the door panels need to be removed, in order to do the speaker replacement, I wanted to take the opportunity to spray the inside of the doors with a rust preventive product called LPS 3. I wouldn't have been able to do this, if I had farmed out the job.

Cool, sounds like you put some thought in the process. If available it's always good to audition other speaker brands but as long as you're happy with what you have that's all that matters

Re: Focals ISS 690, ISC 165 & Polk db351 install tutorial with pics

Hey guys amazing thread here with great instructions.

I actually wasn't sure I was ready to drop all this money on focals without changing to an aftermarket amp setup so i looked to see if there were any new cheaper options out and it seems infinity reference line was updated for 2016 to include 6x9 components!

So I bought:
Center channel: 3.5" infinity 3022cfx (have one extra if anyone wants it. Also have an extra 3.5" polk db351)

Front doors: Infinity 9620cx 6x9 components

Rear doors: Infinity 6522ix 6 3/4" coax

This setup is ~200 dollars cheaper than the focal/polk setup if you shop around and you have all the same brand speakers in all locations (except trunk)

I haven't gotten around to installing them yet but hopefully within the next week I can give a review. Hopefully it sounds good, the specs on the speakers look ok but I'm a newb to car audio. The infinity line up for 2016 looks solid though. Anyone have any thoughts on the setup i'm about to install? How do these look to you? Mind you I paid 160 for the 9620cx and 80 for the 6522ix and 79 for the 3022cfx. (319 total vs 500 for focal/polk)

Hello,

I'm interested in the other center speaker. How much are you willing to sell it for?

Send us some pics and vids of the install. Also are you planning on replacing the front pillar tweeters?? Also why did you go with the infinity speakers as opposed to any others you may have listened to?

Yes I am replacing the tweeters with the infinity tweeters.

I dunno I think for the price and specs they seem like a good set? I don't know much at all about car audio, I didn't even listen to them. Flying blind here but the specs and the price I paid seemed like a solid set all around.

Once done I would love to compare the sound to someone who went with focals to see if they sound 200 dollars better

Since you're mentioning "center channel", it sounds like (pardon the pun) you already have one of the factory upgraded stereo set-ups. Unless I'm wrong, you might already have an amplifier in your system......maybe.

I have the Focal speakers, but I'm using them with a factory base (6 speaker) audio system. I chose the Focals because they have the highest efficiency rating, therefore don't need a ridiculous amount of power to sound good.

I mentioned this in another discussion, and since I'm here right now, I'll post it here, too. When I first installed my Focals, about 6 months ago, I didn't use the Focal supplied, inline x-overs. There is/was a lot of discussion on this site, as to whether the OE radio has a built in x-over, and many folks thought that it did, so I simply wired up my Focals using the OE harness for the feed, and aftermarket adapters to make the connections.

I very recently got involved in a question/answer session at the Crutchfield Audio website, as I provided a customer review for my Focals. This, in turn, had a potential customer asking a couple of specific questions about my purchase/install. That got me curious, so I dug out my OE tweeters, to take a second look at them. What I initially overlooked, is that there's an inline resistor as part of the tweeter, effectively acting as an inline x-over. OK, the "lights went on" in my head, and I then realized that the OE radio is NOT providing a crossover function, it's sending a full range signal to ALL the speakers.

3 days ago, I pulled my front door panels, and installed the Focal x-overs, both the ones for the tweeters, as well as the ones for the woofers. I didn't have much of a chance to listen to the radio that day, but yesterday I was driving around for an extended period of time, giving me a chance to really listen to several different genres of music.

I will say that while I previously thought the Focals sounded considerably better than the OE speakers, the addition of the proper x-overs made them sound notably better yet. I should have taken more time on the original install.......
