For WK2 Overland (2014-2015) owners: what is your opinion on the factory audio sound?

I have not listened to the audio system in the Summit, but I understand it supposed to have a much better audio system than the one on Overland and it makes the car a lot more expensive too.

The sound on my Overland was so awful, it did not take me long to make a decision to replace all my door speakers, which I did in a very first week of ownership. I did not want to spend a lot of money for it, so I ended up with getting mid-range-priced speakers - Quinn for the front and Focal - for the rear. The sound improved dramatically: it is much richer now; it has a lot more highs and it even improved lows too. I did not touch the amp and kept the original sub.

I am curious to find out if anyone else had a similar experience; what did you do and what was the result.

I’m surprised you kept the sub, for me that is the biggest offender. Sound is a very personal thing, what your ears like may not be what I like and vice versa, but some things are certain, and one of those is that the sub is a boomy mess. It has no control and peaks all over the place. For me it ruins everything and no manner of equalizer settings (car or source) can fix it.

I agree with snuke, I found the bass to be the weak spot. As long as the bass is not to loud the sound is OK, but let the bass rip and it deteriorates quality

I was going to replace the sub too, but changed my mind in a very last minute. The thing is that I did not want to spend too much money on it right from the get go. I wanted to hear the difference of the door speakers first and then decide. The only (factory-made) option that I see there is the 10" JL Audio Stealthbox, which is $700 + tax and installation. There is a little cheaper option if I go with external box, but I do want to keep the original looks of the car and I do not want anything to take up my cargo space and shine an invitation for potential criminals. So, if I go with the sub-replacement, I probably would want to install a better amp too, which is going to be another roughly $500. So that makes it roughly $1500 by the time I am done and I am not sure if the cost is justified. Would you have any tip or recommendation?

Nope, I haven't touched ours. As much as I hate it, it's not worth spending money on. If it's just me in the car then I listen to podcasts 99% of the time so it's fine.

Re: For WK2 Overland (2014-2015) owners: what is your opinion on the factory audio so

Greetings,

The Alpine factory system within the forum has many mix opinions from outstanding to crap. Likewise, so does the HK system in the Summit and SRT. In fact you can find a very lengthy thread on the HK here by searching this forum.

As I have stated for many years now, the system that Fiat/Chrysler presented Alpine to work on is a very generic basic system. The factory speakers are not even stamped Alpine. It quite clear after all these years that the design works for them and those who are used to better sound and those are who are on the audiophile level does not matter.

With regards to your dilemma with the sub, it is going to be about $1,500.00 or better as you said. If you are not leasing and keeping the WK2 for a nice span, then the JL Audio solution will be the best solution. To really improve the system and get the full potential out of the sound field, does require some money. The current 8.4 headunit in terms of SQ coming out of it is not bad, but not on a level of the aftermarket head units which you can not install at the moment.

As I have said in the past here, the first question you want to ask yourself about the upgrade process is do I want a traditional front/rear/sub configuration or continue with a 7.1 surround sound system. Since you started with the speakers in the doors already, I would not do anything else until figure out your path including how long you are keeping the WK2.

What is my opinion on the sound quality, hit my link on the signature section below and you will get the complete run down.

Best for now.

Greetings,

Anytime.

I would not do anything to after the CES 2015 show is over and the preliminary reports come out. For 2015, supposedly, there is going to more more integration devices coming out including new combination of DSP/Amp. Some are already out from Audison and Helix.

So stay tuned.

Best for now.
