For under $100 a year I would definitely keep it. Mine runs out at the end of May, I hope they've got something similar going on.

Re: Free Sirius almost over, are you going to renew?

I think I just renewed for a year for $71.55.

I am not a haggler. When I bought my JGC, I accepted the USAA price. The last time I negotiated a price was when I bought my house thirty years ago. But so many people here report success that I thought I'd give it a try.

My free subscription is about to expire. Sirius cold-called me to make the standard offer of $159. I told them that I like the service but this price is too expensive, and I asked to pay $77. A little hemming and hawing and this was approved, but then the music license fee was added on to bring the total to $84.55. I asked to have the license fee credited and was told I would be transferred to customer service to handle this when my transaction was complete. When asked for a credit card, I said that I don't do credit cards and asked for an invoice. I accepted the additional $2/year for the invoice; that's a legitimate expense and too small to hassle over.

Then I was transferred to customer service, where I talked with a laid-back fellow who was willing to let me see how the system works. He asked me to tell him point blank that I would cancel if I didn't get a credit for the license fee. This I did. He couldn't find a way to credit the fee, and then asked me if a credit of $15 for one month of service would keep me from canceling. I said "yes" loud and clear for the recording, whereupon he applied this credit. So I expect the invoice will be $84.55 + $2 - $15 = $71.55.

Speaking the correct key phrase "I will cancel unless" to the customer service rep seems to be vital. That gives them options they can exercise to retain the customer.

Update 2012 May 3: the paper-mail invoice is in fact in the amount of $71.55 for "Sirius Select 1 Year". The service period is 4/21/12-4/21/13.

Re: Free Sirius almost over, are you going to renew?

My free 1 year of SiriusXM expires on July 27th. I called Sirius today and the best offer they would give me was $86 + taxes = $94.33, without TravelLink (extra money for that). I tried the I'll let it expire and I'll cancel routine, but she wouldn't budge on the price. Anybody getting any better prices than what I was offered?

I pay four dollars per month. They offered me something like that price for the year, I simply said no thanks and hanged up. They called back, I said no again to the lower price. And I kept saying no and no to each time they called me back until I was like ok 4 bucks a month isn't bad. lolol

You have to hold out. That's all.

Call up.... tell them you want the premium package which is a 6 month trial for $25. Tell them you know a bunch of people that have gotten this same deal and you don't have time to talk about other options. They will give it to you no hassle. I just did this last week.

Re: Free Sirius almost over, are you going to renew?

I'm about to buy my GC and it's unlikely I'll ever listen to the sat radio even when it's "free"...for local driving, I have a great non-commercial music station that is all I listen to and when I travel, I have a very well stocked music library on my iPhone that I just put in shuffle mode and enjoy as I move along.

The few times I've used sat radio in rentals, I've been disappointed with both the content and the quality. I'd never pay for it. We didn't renew the freebie on my wife's Outback, either. In fact, we've never listened to it!

Re: Free Sirius almost over, are you going to renew?

I tried the traffic conditions update on my drives here and they are always incorrect. Sometimes, it shows red when the traffic is flowing freely and vice versa. The other day it was yellow and the highway was parking lot. Throughout this traffic jam, the color on the maps did not change from yellow to red at all. My good old Garmin Nuvi is spot on every time when it came to traffic information.

I too do not listen to sat radio except for CNBC and BBC occasionally. I won't be renewing after my initial trial period is over.

Cheers,
-A

Re: Free Sirius almost over, are you going to renew?

I just got off the phone with them, again. They wouldn't budge. $86/year + tax + extra for traffic, OR $24.99 + tax & no traffic for 5 months.

As I was trying to negotiate and ask how much extra they charge for traffic (WAS going to see if they would at least throw that in for free), she got smart and said "when you get serious, give us a call back", and then she hung up on me, talk about bad customer service.

Guess I'm not calling back, with that attitude!

By the way, my subscription ends tomorrow.
