Re: From the horses mouth on the Harman Kardon System

Though I appreciate a good sounding stereo you both have far more knowledge on the technicals of what it takes to make a stereo sound correct than I do. So based on the limited EQ that we have with the HK what would be the best EQ settings for an un modified stock HK? Any thoughts or estimates? thanks

The best way to demo a Atmos receiver is go and find a Dolby Atmos equipped movie theater that is playing an excellent action/adventure movie and a sic-fi. Then demo a receiver when they hit the market. Pioneer Elite is suppose to be out this holiday season with the firmware update.

Dolby Atmos

Best for now.
I believe Onkyo receivers are slated to have atmos now or soon with a FW update as well even in their 8x8 series receivers.

Right now i'm at 0/+9/0 and have reported the SPL responses based on this EQ in an earlier post. My problem is that under every source the sound is dramatically different. Radio sounds like radio, HD Radio sounds great, but too much sibilance in the highs, Pandora streaming sounds the best. Have not tested with an MP3 or WAV source yet since this experiment. I'll report back as I continue my testing and tuning.

Greetings,

Mind you I have not played with a JGC HK system, but here is a technique that is always helpful that can be adapted to the HK.

If you have the CD built-in, then listen to some of your favorite music. This always has the best non compression for music. If not, ask others who have the HK for their opinion.

Keep the LOGIC 7 on, I believe the center channel is set for a wide dispersion of sound.
  1. What I like too do is bring all the levels of the eq down and start out with the MIDS first to establish the vocals. For this, you will be using the MIDS. Listen to different music with strong vocals and play with the eq setting until you feel it right or close enough for you. Record that setting for latter use and bring the MIDS down.
  2. Next play some music that has some HI's (treble) and some upper end midrange. This is the HI setting on the eq you are going after. Find the ideal setting as in the first step. Now play the same music that you did in step 1 and bring the MID's back to the setting you like. Now listen for a while and make any adjustments to those 2 eq settings (MIDS & HI's) that you think might help. Remember do not bring up the bass yet. Once you established this to your liking. Record or remember your settings and then bring them down.
  3. The next step you find some music with some good bass tracks and music that gets down low. Find your sweet spot for the bass and do not be afraid to play with the volume. Remember your setting.
  4. Now bring all the eq setting to your recorded spots and play some music from different genres, even soundtracks from the movies is a great source. If you have the Premium App from Aupeo, they have excellent choices in both vocals and instrumentals. Make any adjustments that you feel that is needed.
Unfortunately, the eq is very limited, but this should give you a fighting chance.

Best for now.

I agree i just bought my car on Sunday and I wasn't happy with the hk system that came with my summit.. I am a music engineer and this system sounds muddy with the highs up, mids at the middle and the base 4 down from center... I've played with the mids and bring them up only makes the voice just louder not clearer.. I put the surround sound to see if it made the difference and I can't tell the change.. At volume 25 it can sound good but at 26-32 the base is distorted.. My right rear passenger speaker sounds blown from day one.. Smh definitely not a sharp or clear system at all.. Can anyone chime in with the hk system and verify that then can make there system very sharp and clear or do all these systems sound like this.. For 825 watt system my wife's system sounds way clearer at all levels and never distorts..

This may not help you, but there is a bug with the EQ. Every time you start the car the EQ adjustments aren't in effect until you go back into settings and make an adjustment. At that point your EQ settings become "enabled" again.

So are you telling me the levels zero out sound wise and visually or it just zeros out sound wise and the levels visually remains the same? My speaker sounds blown regardless from day one and im gonna have to bring that in for inspection..

1) it just zeros out sound wise and the levels visually APPEAR to remain the same. I also suspect the surround settings also might default to OFF until an adjustment on the eq is made, but I am unsure. On my 2015, the EQ bug seems to be inconsistent, so Im not sure if its tied to seat memory or whats up

2) There were some early 2014 posts of folks who had blown/damaged speakers right out of the factory. So DEFINITELY get that checked out. Might be ruining the whole setup for you.

Hope it works out. Let us know.

My HK system EQ retains it's settings and there is a noticeable difference when you turn surround sound on as it's brighter and spread out. I've been leaving mine off lately. I'd definitely check this out as it doesn't sound right.

As far as sound goes, it can change depending on the source. I've had the same song from my computer sound different on my iPhone, USB and SD card with the best sounding on the SD card. Plus you can play higher quality music on an SD card while the iPhone is limited to 16 bit/44 k music.

Re: From the horses mouth on the Harman Kardon System

Well ive been basing this off of my xm radio.. my iphone is a little flatter but over all not a clean clear sound at all.. Got to do my home work now to source a good dealership around me.. Im in elizabeth nj and i work in manhattan.. Hopefully can find someone decent between there or around.. As of now this system is definitely not something to brag about.. Bass response is sounds like a cheap system.. Clarity sounds as a cheap system.. With all the speakers around doesnt sound like they are all working.. I feel as if the put the wrong speakers in.. Hopefully this isnt a big fix
