Garmin wire ideas

My 2012 GC Limited came with the 730N system. The nav is "ok", but I also have (purchased last year before getting the GC) a brand new Garmin 3490LMT. The Garmin's interface is pretty much perfect. I can use it for traffic and it doesn't duck my music for directions home from work.

I have it on the bean bag mount, but the issue is the power wire. You need the wire to receive the HD Radio traffic updates, but it runs right down the dash and you have to leave the storage compartment door open.

Are there any other creative solutions to this problem? Some add on for a more concealed plug?

You could use the center console power outlet if the cable reaches. There is a slot on the passenger side to pass the wire through so all compartment lids can stay closed.

Someone was looking for a more concealed method the run power to a phone a couple months ago. I dunno if he found a way short of drilling, but perhaps a search may turn up something for you.

I used the power outlet in the center stack below the radio. I did have to drill a small hole in order for the wires to pass through. Ran the wire to the driver's side and up between the piller and dash. Used suction cup mount for gps unit. Appx 1.5" of wire is visible.

Chose to mount on extreme left on dash due to the fact I can't stand something blocking my forward view.

I will also add, DO NOT cut the plug from the Garmin power cables if you plan to hardwire/splice it into an alternative power source. *Most* of the garmin 12vdc plugs have a small voltage regulator inside. If you wire the cord straight to 12volt and it's plugged into your unit, you'll have an early 4th of July. Well, no explosions, but your unit will becomed scorched earth.

this is true because your Garmin GPS units are powered by USB which is 5VDC

your vehicle when turned on will be cranking out 13.8VDC and will fry it. what you will need to do if you want to hard wire it in is one of 2 things

A: find a 5vDC source in your vehicle somewhere. or pull apart the end of the cord that goes into the cig lighter socket. find the wires that go to the center of the plug for +V and the wire that goes to the outside of the plug -V then hard wire these into the back side of the cig lighter power wires using a wire taps. and you should be all set.

That would work. Although, a better idea is to get a female cigarette lighter outlet with a pigtail on the other end ( http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sk...w56482cilisodo ). Wire this to your 12 volt fused source. Then just plug in the Garmin unit to it. The benefit is that if you want to upgrade your unit later it will just be plug and play and you don't void the warranty of the Garmin device by altering the power source.

this is true, but its another point of failure. if this is stuffed in behind your dash somewhere and all of a sudden your garmin stops getting power then you have to figure out if its the power cable, the fuse is the power cable the new cig lighter socket, or the connection to the constant 12v source. not to mention its an extra $16 to buy another socket. where as typically DIY stuff your trying to save money by modding something to do what it wasn't initially intended to do.

I also had a Garmin GPS unit I liked before purchasing my Laredo-X, so I didn't want the built-in NAV unit option.

There's a small plastic "plug" in the dash grill, next to the center channel speaker. I drilled a notch in that just large enough to fit my power cable through. Be careful when deciding where to drill because the plug only fits into the grill one way due to the clips (I found that out the hard way when I thought it was interchangeable).

It's very easy to route the cable down through the center media center/HVAC area and plug into the center power port. You will need to pull out the radio because you'll be running the cord behind it. With the power cord plugged in I still have enough room for my sunglasses case and the door opens and shuts easily.

It's not a perfect solution since you can still see some power cord behind the bean bag, but I'm happy with it.

Sorry, I didn't take any photos when I was running the cable, but I'll try to describe what I did the best I can.

You start by removing the instrument panel center bezel (I've included a .pdf that describes this).

Next you want to pull out the radio. The Jeep instructions say to disconnect the battery first, but I've always skipped that step.

Next you'll remove the defroster grill. This is the part of the dash where the center channel speaker is.

If you look behind where the radio was you should see daylight coming down from where the defroster grill was. You can feed your power cable up or if you're having difficulty use a fish tape or coat hanger. Once the fish tape or other device is through, tape your power cable to it and pull it back through.

There is an opening on the right side of the storage compartment, where the center power port is, that will allow you to run your power cable through. You'll need to position it so that it doesn't interfere with the compartment door opening and closing.

There's plenty of room behind the bezel to route your power cable.

Check your cable length on top of the dash, double check your cable routing through the console, double check that the compartment door opens and closes and then just put everything back together.

Pretty easy job that should take less than an hour.
