The USB port on the front of the unit has always worked well for me. Anyone else find the one in the armrest a little flakey?

That's an insane price difference between the sandisk website and best buy.com lol.

Re: HDD music short

Anyone ever figure out a solution to the original problem of mp3 files being cut short when played from the hard drive?

I have the 16gb usb in there now and it works fine, but it would still be nice to use the hard drive in the unit instead.

It works fine, except that about 1 in 5 cd's isn't recognized by gracenotes, and I have to enter in the album name, artist and song title manually which can be a PITA.
I feel that ripping cds directly to the head unit is very slow and cumbersome. I have all my cds ripped into itunes already. All the songs have correct mp3 tags and the volume has been normalised so that they all have the same volume. All I did was load up the enire music collection on a 32 gig usb drive and stick it in the front usb and left it there for an hour or two and my entire music collection ( about 6000 songs! ) was transferred without any problem. I can browse the music in any format just like on itunes and add or delete songs, albums or even folders anytime I want . I really have not touched a cd in the last 5 years. Most of the music I bought was on Amazon or Itunes.

Re: HDD music short

But I bet you don't have any album art if you download from a thumbdrive to the HDD. Unfortunately, album art only works if downloaded to the HDD directly from the original CD. And even then, it only works about 80% of the time because the Gracenote database is so poor. But I am used to it now, and have given up on album art or ever getting a Gracenote update for the 420/430N series media centers. Per Jeep the "last update for the 430N was April 2011, and no further updates are planned at this time."

The problem with listening directly from the thumbdrive in either USB port is waiting 1-2 minutes at every start/power-up for the thumbdrive to initialize before you can listen to any music. Also, the thumbdrive does not return to the place where it was when you turned off the GC, it goes back to the beginning every time - arrgh. Which is why I download to the HDD even with all of it's faults.

It will return to the place if, before you turn off the car, you select another audio source. I select CD (there's no CD in the slot.) Then when I turn the car on I select AUX and I'm back where I was.

Yeah, it's a pain.

Re: HDD music short

I took songs from my iTunes to a flash drive to the Jeep hard drive (730N RHR) and the Jeep displays the album art for some of it (e.g. songs purchased through iTunes, not from a CD).

Re: HDD music short

Yes, that's exactly what was stated. The album art works fine when playing directly from a thumbdrive in either USB port. The album art does not work if you download the thumbdrive onto the HDD (as in none, not some, for me at least). That includes songs ripped from CD's and downloaded from iTunes and/or Amazon using the Chrysler and Gracenote recommended iTunes software. The only album art I have been able to display on my 430N is for CD's that I downloaded directly from the original CD to the HDD (and even then, some newer CD's will not display due to the weak Gracenote database).

The issue with playing off the thumbdrive is having it plugged into the faceplate USB (that tab hangs down, even if you use a nano thumbdrive), and on mine the armrest USB takes much longer to initialize than the faceplate USB for the thumbdrive for some reason. See the explanation above as to speed of initialization and the way to work around being able to restart the thumbdrive where it was when powered down.

The more music you have on your thumbdrive, the longer it takes to initialize. I have 12 gb on my thumbdrive currently, and it takes between 1-2 minutes for the music to start from the thumbdrive. I have tried this on several different thumbdrive sizes from 4 gb to 16 gb, and different brands of thumbdrives -with exactly the same results. I also tried downloading the iTune album art file from the thumbdrive to the HDD directly, but the HDD does not recognize the file formatting.

Now, if you can figure out how to download the thumbdrive to the HDD and still get album art - you would receive many thanks from forum members. Because many calls, emails and discussions with Chrysler, Gracenote, dealers and forum members have produced zilch so far for me.

I just said I have album art on the HD that I downloaded from a thumb drive. I don't know how or why. Most songs don't have it but some do.

I understood you correctly the first time and agree. I have tons of songs downloaded to my HDD from a memory stick (most from itunes) and I get album art probably 60% of the time. I had to update the Gracenotes to get this much album art, but it was easy and instructions are found here:

RHR Gracenotes Update (Sox comes through again!)

I do however, have the problem where some of the songs get cut short. Some do but some don't. Would love to know how to resolve this while still listening to the music that was downloaded to the HDD. Other than that, the system has been great.

Re: HDD music short

Yea, I have the same problem with some of the songs being cut off short. What really upsets me is several of my iPod/iTunes songs didn't transfer either to the thumb drive or to the hard drive (730N). I think it's because of old formatting from apple. And my iPod (nano 2nd gen) doesn't work through the radio controls; I have to use an Auxillary cord. Jeep.com website for the 730N RHR says that this model iPod is supposed to be supported for radio controls using the USB. Dealer never called me after they said they would check with Jeep and I never followed up for it; well I did, but they said to just bring it in again and they'd check for an update. They're 40 miles away and I don't really want them messing it up worse or replacing it entirely.

Re: HDD music short

Update ping...
Still no solution to this? It drives me crazy that an RHR stereo cannot correctly play MP3 songs. I can buy a 30 dollar cheap mp3 player that can correctly display and play MP3, craziness.

I have a NAS at home and transfer my MP3 from that to a thumb drive (about 4k songs), then I upload from thumb drive to the HDD. This isn't a rights problem because that would keep the song from playing, and besides I don't use iTunes, which has serious rights management religion. All of my media is on my NAS, no CDs.

For almost a year I drove around with the micro USB in the slot -
Advantages to USB - plays through the folders without replaying the same folder over and over (the HDD won't play through a folder).
Disadvantages to USB - no Artist search, no genre and no favorites, just folder navigation

I've tried NTFS, FAT32 formatting on the thumb drive transfer with no luck.

I did play from my bluetooth blackberry for a while, but that is an unnecessary drain on the phone battery.

I just updated the software/firmware/gracenotes on my RHR hoping this would be fixed v1.26, but it is not - songs are still clipped. So I'm pinging for ideas/solutions.

One possibility - I download my MP3s from Amazon. Amazon uses variable bit rate songs. It might be possible that the VBR songs are having the issues, I'll have to find an old MP3 ripped from a CD to test - but other's could provide their specifics.

Thanks
