How often are the maps updated?

navteq site is quite horrid

it lets me select a vehicle and they says "yup there are updates"
doesn't give me when they were updated last, what version they are - nothing

from digging through some forums it appears maps are updated quarterly?

at $150 bucks I want to make sure I get the latest greatest and If I purchase today do I get maps that were updated on 12/31/12 and if I wait until 3/1/13 I would get a newer version?

Please shed some light on these navteq mysterious ways...

Also is this just a dvd they send me and I click update? If so I assume there multi use and could be obtained from "other" sources if I knew the name if the disk?

Maps are not updated quarterly. Maybe once a year if lucky. The disc you will receive from navteq is specific for your VIN and can not be used in another vehicle.

Re: How often are the maps updated?

Morty346,

I wish I could answer this for you, the info I give you may help though. I just ordered the new NAV update disc for my 2011 JGC with the RHR radio. I'm up in Alaska and it took about 3 weeks to get here. :O When the disc came it also had the "old" software update disc with it. 2.126... I didn't use that disc because I had already updated my softare thanks to *sox* with the 2.136 software. It took a little over 1 hour to update the maps. (I'm not at home right now so I can't look and see if the disc or booklet has a date on it)

Good Luck with your decision!

Maybe with paid upgrades but not the case with the "complimentary" upgrades some of us received. It's not the disk, but the unlock code that is specific to the vehicle. Interesting fact: The single use coupon code that they sent with the complimentary updates could be used to obtain an unlock code for a different GC, even one that doesn't qualify for the free update. So, people that received an update (or two) that they didn't need could give them to someone else.

Re: How often are the maps updated?

I just updated my '11 WK2 740N (rer) nav database. It was the first available since owning the car (build date Feb '11). Looks like every other year.
BTW, I could see no difference in the maps for my area, new subdivisions are not included, and some POIs listed have been out of business for years.

Re: How often are the maps updated?

The Harmon RHR (730N) has perhaps annual updates but, from the posts in this forum, the updated maps are two or three years behind what you get for a stand alone Garmin. Doesn't seem to be worth $150. Garmin usually updates their maps quarterly for their stand alone units.

Not sure how its been for the Garmin based 430N.

Re: How often are the maps updated?

grrr... frustrating - I have an 11 overland with RHR so no free maps for me.

-if they would put a few more details on what I am buying I would be more inclined to buy an update - In the last couple of weeks I have tried to use POI a few times ( I live in Orlando ).

I put in some pretty obvious things such as SeaWorld and it routed me 10 miles away from it - I looked for POI near my house and according to my maps MLK jr. was born in my neighborhood -

would be great if they actually let you look at the map and decide if its worth an upgrade - I guess this is what you get when the map industry is monopolized :/

Thanks for info -

If others could post:
Version Numbers of DISC
Date Received
Radio Model Number
perhaps we can start making some sense of what we can receive and if its worth the investment and when

You are correct. I had to buy the update because I was outside the complimentary upgrade.

Re: How often are the maps updated?

Those that have purchased and installed the latest Nav update have indicated it was pretty much a waste of money and time. The maps do not update that often. I have lifetime updates on my portable Garmin Nav and update every once in a while, but have NEVER noticed any difference (the mistakes and missing roads remain even after years of updates).

You will never get $150 value out of the update. Save the $ for when you order your next new GC, and apply it to the down payment.
