I have an old phone - it paired up okay with the uconnect and works well but did not bring over my phone book. Can I download the phone book thru the USB port or is there another way other than typing it all in manually ?

It should download automatically. If it doesn't, your phone doesn't support that feature. There's no real way to download it in any other way. I'm not even sure if it's possible to input the phone book manually.

You may need to upgrade your phone to one that supports Handsfree Profiles (not just Bluetooth itself, HFP is a certain part of the bluetooth spec that was not always implemented in the phones themselves).

From what I understand, the car will only accept up to 1,000 contacts. I have close to 1,300. What will happen to the additional contacts when I pair?

You don't so much open it as you do dial numbers by voice. If you say "Call Bob Smith" and Bob Smith is in your phone book, it will call him. If he has multiple numbers, it will ask you which one to call (you can circumvent this by saying "Call Bob Smith Mobile" for his mobile phone).

Will the U-Connect read text messages or emails to you or display them on the screen so you don't have to look at your phone?

The 730N RER won't.

The 430N RHB has some text functionality, but I don't know how much. Same may go for the 730N RHB. I couldn't tell you how much though; I have the RER, and if somebody sends me a text while I'm driving, they get to wait until I pull over someplace before I bother looking at it.
