Impressions on the Harman Kardon

In the market for a GC, good sound is pretty important to me so I first drove a overland but the non HK system did not impress my golden ears at all so I then drove a summit with the Harman Kardon but when I cranked it up to be honest I was expecting allot more then it gave out. I quickly checked the EQ settings thinking it was in news setting or something but it seemed to not have gendre EQ settings, all I found was fade front to back, which was centred. I've always had good custom systems in vehicles, except for my last Audi which has the Bose upgraded oem system which Ive been living with. Curious how you would rate yours.

Re: Impressions on the Harman Kardon

Extremely good stereo! LOVE it! I have compared both as well and found HK system to be significantly better than the base stereo. In the EQ settings I like my treble all the way up, mids at about mid level, and bass 3 notches below middle (from the factory they are all just set to middle, or flat). Try those EQ settings along with a quality song streamed from your phone and I think you'll be impressed. Easily the best stereo in a car I have owned.

And btw I'm glad this stereo doesn't have all those goofy gendre settings. Can't stand that kind of stuff. I like all my music one way, every time, all the time, regardless of what I'm listening to. So the simplicity of this system is actually greatly welcomed by me.

I have had my HK for three years and I like it very much. One thing to keep in mind is that XM is a compressed signal and terrible sounding don't judge the HK based on XM. Take a properly recorded SD card with you it can make a world of difference in how the HK sounds. SD card, FM HD, USB, CD, streaming over bluetooth from smart phone all sound fine, but XM sounds like crap.

Re: Impressions on the Harman Kardon

No EQ? Don't know what's up with that as it has a treb-mid-bass EQ....it still lacks pre-built genre 1-touch EQ settings (like Rock, Jazz, etc...) and could use another range adjustment between treb-mid and another mid-bass for a total of 5 vs the 3 it has...just my opinion...

Since you are an audio guy then you know source is everything...the HD radio and of course your own good files rock pretty good. For a factory premium stereo it's pretty good...there is no way I could own a JGC without the HK. It's actually the reason I initially bought the Summit over the Overland back when the HK was not an option on the Overland. Yes, it's overpriced but what you gonna do about it The amp can easily be overwhelmed if you are a "basser"....pretty easy to get it to cut out playing some Queen or AC/DC

IMHO, anyone who cares about good tunes with some "push" behind them has no choice but to get the HK.

Re: Impressions on the Harman Kardon

Yeah, I've been really impressed with the Harmon Kardon system. I've spent countless dollars putting in aftermarket stereos in my previous vehicles. This is the first time that I can say that I wouldn't spend anything extra to improve the sound.

Great highs, great lows. I like bass, so I may throw some midlevel 10" subs (JL w3 level) for some added bass...but it's hard to justify spending $1000+ on something that sounds so good already. I'd say it rivals the mercedes high end systems that come in their AMG models.

Re: Impressions on the Harman Kardon

Greetings,

To begin with, sound is perceived differently by us. No two people hear sound the same.

As you hit the nail on the head regarding the Alpine system based on your level audio quality, it is truly state of the art system for the dumpster. When I purchased my JGC back in 2011 with Alpine in it, I new it was desented for the dumpster as well. I purchased the JGC for the quality of the product.

With regards to the HK system, I have now heard a few times, IMHO, it is a good sounding system. For my personal taste, it is not up to my standards. For one, I do not like the speaker placements and I am not fond of the up end frequencies. Besides the fact that you have limited tuning capablities. Do keep in mind that the design by Harman is based upon the specifications given by FCA.

Since I do not know your level of an audiophile, I am not sure if you will like it. I have seen many top end European cars with the OE HK system being upgraded. From simple speaker swaps to mid level upgrades and to full blown upgrades.

As fellow member SILVERMAX04 pointed out, do not demo it with the SirusXm. Use a material you a familiar with on a CD, USB or an SD card. Now, the best way to compare the JGC HK system is to go to hi-end audio shop and see if you can listen to one of their upgrades. This will tell you whether or not the Jeep HK system meets your needs. If you plan to lease, then do not bother of upgrading.

Best for now.

Re: Impressions on the Harman Kardon

audio nerd here, loving the HK. probably the best factory stereo i've had/heard. i agree that speaker placement is kind of odd, but i don't really have a better idea for this type of vehicle without spending a ton of money.

if you're the guy that drives through my neighborhood with all bass, enough that it rattles the license plate and fenders on his POS, you may not like it. but, i'm pretty stoked.

Never had this problem with the HK in the '14 Summit but in my '15 SRT I had a severe rattle in my driver side rear door during accel/decel so off to the dealer I went...speaker nuts were so loose the speaker was about to fall out.....I asked him how that happens, he asked me what music I listen to....80's rock of course...woofers are in the rear doors!

Re: Impressions on the Harman Kardon

I had the Alpine system (no HK option back then) in my previous 2012 Overland. As others have stated, it was crappy. The HK in my 2014 Summit is the best system in any vehicle I have owned to date. Better than the Mark Levinson from Lexus and many other brands premium systems. It's even better than the optional Burmester system in the Mercedes C450 AMG. Though the 3D Burmester one in the S Class did sound really good. But, guess it should, since it's their flagship.

I will say that even on Sirius, the HK makes it sound better than any other vehicles satellite radio. But of course, USB, SD Card or phone sounds best.

Re: Impressions on the Harman Kardon

Make sure you are using hd audio from an SD or USB or a good service like Spotify HD. That being said, the HK audio system in my jeep is far superior to the Bose system in my Cadillac. Audio is extremely important to me and its sad that most car companies don't take it seriously enough. Jeep is the exception. They understand the importance of good audio and you will not be disappointed. I always use to buy aftermarket, but in my jeep it never crossed my mind

Re: Impressions on the Harman Kardon

I know a lot of guys say don't use XM for its sound quality, but for the most part I feel even XM sounds pretty good I think. Again, make sure you have the EQ settings set accordingly.
