Re: Infinity upgrade not worth it!

Heres the bottom line:

If you want a brighter sound with more clarity then do the upgrade, but you will need the JL stealthbox and a amp to balance the system out. You will be missing mid and low range sounds, in fact I just read a review on the infinity speakers (Infinity Car Speakers Reviews | StereoChamp) that says "while most car speakers can reach as low as 30 Hz, we’ve found that many infinity speakers can not handle deep low frequencies below 45 Hz. However, when it comes to mids and highs, that’s where these speakers really shine" So my experience makes sense, its not totally subjective.

Additionally, I can tell the stock amp is not sufficient for these speakers; they are somewhat under powered. So if I was to spend more money, I would get the JL stealthbox and a 5 channel amp to power the JL sub and the other speakers.

But then you run into the problem of setting up the amp, not sure how other people have done it. Does the 8.4N have RCA connects? Or are the using the existing speaker wire and pushing it thru the amp?

Also forgot to mention, the equalizer on the 8.4 system sucks.. especially with the infinity speakers, changes are marginal at best.

Infinity upgrade not worth it!

I would bet you have speakers out of phase. If you went to good installers they should have tested the phase of each speaker as they were installed, Least that's how I would do it.

My phase tester cost me $50 and it's my go to when I don't have a schematic to use. Works like s charm.

Re: Infinity upgrade not worth it!

So what do you need to setup an amp with the 8.4 system? I'm assuming no rca outputs on the 8.4.

Re: Infinity upgrade not worth it!

Most are looking for a simple upgrade from that bass heavy stock system. Once you start adding amps then yes of course you can tune things a lot better. That 8.4 head unit is tuned a particular way that may not allow the full range of any sound from newer speakers that are installed. Once you start changing the head unit, and install amps now you're talking about bigger amount of money. A persons direction on any upgrade is dictated by cost, wants and needs. Anything a better then what came with the original system unless you have the HK and depending on the upgrade to can better that sound also.

Re: Infinity upgrade not worth it!

I had the same issue. Thats why I was wondering if I needed the crossovers in that other thread. I have the bass +9 , the mid 0, and the treble -3. I'm upgrading my sub and adding a sub amp. Hopefully that will balance it out.

Re: Infinity upgrade not worth it!

Let us know how it works out?? It's hard to believe those speakers are that weak on mid level bass. Highs only basically. We await your newest connections as use a crossover has been stated as not needed.

Re: Infinity upgrade not worth it!

Yeah, once I get the sub in I'm sure it will be fine. If I had it to do over again, I would upgrade the center channel with the Polk, do a shallow sub in a custom box, and a small amp. And call it a day.

Infinity upgrade not worth it!

DUDE let the ****ing speakers break in.

Didn't we all say it took 2 months for them to break in so you can hear the bass again! Leave your bass at +9 and lower your treble to +4 or less. Its a huge difference from when they are new the first week til when they break in.

ALSO your issue may very well be the rear door tweeters pointing up instead of down and make sure the treble boost on them is in the off (+-0) position. This is 100% key to having good sound and makes an incredible difference. The rear tweeters NEED to be pointing toward the floor!

You need to give it some time and stop bitching and make sure it was installed correctly.

You also need to get the infinity center speaker as well.

On top of this what is the source of your music? FM / XM will never sound great in this car. Use a high quality Bluetooth or usb/memory card source.

I have all my speakers switched over to the infinity's and it is night and day how much better this system is than the stock speakers. People who ride in my car are amazed at how good it sounds and ask me if I have an aftermarket sub. Either you need to check your install and upgrade the center as well (this is key). Or you just aren't being patient enough with letting the speakers break in before ranting.

what are your eq settings? and please make sure surround mode is on (it adds bass)

I recommend +9 bass 0 mid +4 treble, centered balance front and rear, and surround mode on with the infinity's

The infinity's are louder than the stock speakers at the same volume not sure why you would think they require more power then the stockers. The sensitivity rating on the infinity's is much higher than stock.

Re: Infinity upgrade not worth it!

So I have the component speakers, the 6 3/4 in the rear is just a mid range woofer, I did not install the tweeter. The only tweeters are the component ones in the A pillar.

I'm assuming we must have different speakers.

Also, what does the surround sound mode actually do?

I have these speakers:
infinity Reference REF-6520cx 6 3/4” 90 watts RMS (270 watts peak power) 3ohm
infinity Reference REF-9620cs 6x9 125 watts RMS (375 watts peak power) 3ohm

On Crutchfield is says even those these are 3ohm's, the head factory unit will recognize them as 4ohm's. Which makes sense, because they sound underpowered, more ohms, more power you need to push the sound.
