Re: IOS6 supports SMS via MAP

Would you mind trying something for me? I would like you to press the VR button and say "set up, software update". If you have the most current SW version, then you'll see 63-2-48 on the screen. If you don't then you need the update pperformed. (TSB # 08-018-12). Here's a note from the TSB:

08-018-12:

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles built up to January 1, 2012(MDH 0101XX)
equipped WITH UConnect Voice Command w/Bluetooth (sales code RSP,
RSQ) and WITHOUT Media Center 730N CD/DVD/MP3/HDD/NAV (sales code
RER or RHR) or Media Center 735N CD/DVD/HDD/NAV (sales code REW or
RHW) or Media Center 731N CD/DVD/HDD/NAV (sales code REP ) or AM/FM
CD MP3 NAV RADIO - ROW (sales code RHP) .

The complete bulletin can be found at the link below:
Free Cloud Storage - MediaFire

SIRI, Visual Voice mail & Voice memos all become unsupported after the update. The reason is because of the way an incoming call is handled while in any one of these features. While in one of these features, if you receive a call, press the Uconnect button to accept the call, then SIRI is dropped and the incoming call is sent to your voice mail. You don't know this, so you're stuck there saying "hello, hello" with no response from the caller. You later notice that the caller has (maybe, if they decided to) left a VM message.

I don't know about you or others but for me, SIRI isn't as wonderful as the commecrcialls make her out to be. I often get ticked off at her inability to get a sentence correct.

You asked how I know about something but in the "quote" there were a couple of things that I mentioned. Which were you referring to?
If you're asking about not supporting MAP for outgoing messages, then I know this from speaking to an Apple contact. Now even though he's a contact, Apple keeps their employees very secretive and a question may not be answered directly, but an answer will be received if you continue asking in a 'round about way. They don't like to answer with a "yeah we didn't fully test that and we need to look into it".

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

with the iOS6, when using SIRI, you now have the AirPlay menu on the phone where you can select to use SIRI on the phone but still be connected to Uconnect incase you receive an incoming call while using her.

The problem with SIRI

If it is a choice between Siri and SMS, I guess I would have to pick Siri.

Well neither of those are big surprises, but I am curious how you know this. I'm not doubting it is true just wondering where to find information like this. For another example, look at Apple's support of Nike+ (proprietary) vs Ant+ (standard). Or their new dock connector which could have easily been micro-usb. Reminds me of this:

Thanks for your help. When I press the VR button and say, "set up" then "software update" is not one of the options. I tried saying them both together it doesn't do anything. I tried the same thing after pressing the phone button but it wasn't recognized there either. I also went into menu | system information and I do not see any numbers similar to '63-2-48'. Just to confirm, I have a 2012 430N RHB radio - built roughly 10/2011.

Micro-USB consists of a pair of power pins and a pair of 480Mbps digital data pins. That's fine for syncing a phone or transmitting audio, but there's not enough bandwidth for a video signal.

Re: IOS6 supports SMS via MAP

Darn, sorry about that. My back is killing me today and not thinking staright. It's not the VR button. It is the Uconnect button, press & rellease it, say "set up, software update" without too much time between words. The command needs to be inn the form of 1 sentence. This command will not be in the menu if you say "set up" and she tells you the options.
The other way to draw this info out is to press & hold the Uconnectt button for about 12 seconds, you'll hear a couple prompts and please attach USB..... then the SW version may come up on the screen. Now you'll only see the SW version if you have the V2 Uconnect SW (which would be in vehicles built poost 1-1-2012) In the V1 SW the version won't come upp on the screen. This is 1 of the enhancement for technicians.
I am leaning toward you having the V1 SW version. In that case you will need to perform the TSB 08-018-12 SW update. If you can't get the dealer to perform it, you can do it yoursellf with the greatest of ease.

Ok, either way it asks to attach the USB device and does not display the SW version. So I need to update per TSB 08-018-12. This should add MAP SMS support, right? I found the download on another site and I don’t particularly mind losing SIRI over Bluetooth but my main interest is in gaining the SMS functions. Thanks for your help!

I updated to 08-018-12 and now get the version number when I do the "setup software update". Still no SMS with IOS6 though. And no SIRI via Bluetooth. Oh well. Are there any other updates I can do now that I am on V2?

Re: IOS6 supports SMS via MAP

Your system is now supporting SMS thru the MAP profile. The iOS6 currently has issues with the MAP support and Apple is looking into it. Right now I'm not sure what they're doing about it. I do know that the way it is supported by the Uconnect system works, this is because there are BlackBerry, HTC, Samsung & LG phones that work with it. Funny thing is that they all have a model that works then a new model doesn't. You'd think they'd look at the one that does work and use it as a model.

Not until Apple takes a look at the Uconnect SW to see how they (Apple) need to get along and work.
You're probably asking why "'Apple needs to do something"? Well SMS works fine with several other phones, if there is a band aid made to work with iOS6, then there's a chance that SMS would stop working with the phones that it does already work with.

I'm not particularly surprised that it doesn't work yet with IOS6 as Apple probably customized the implementation to work better with Siri. Apple always walks its own path and expects other manufacturers to fall in line or get left out.

Re: IOS6 supports SMS via MAP

Hello,
I have a 2013 GC with Uconnect. Originally my GC came with a RES radio. I swapped it out for a 430n rhb that came out of a 2011 GC. I also use a Samsung Galaxy S 3 phone. Should the SMS through MAP feature work with this setup? If so, how do yo use it?
Thanks for any help,
Willie
