ipad + 430n?

Okay, I'm getting prepared for my long road trip bringing the truck home. I'm trying to minimize the amount of stuff I have to carry, because flying with anything these days is a pain.

The trip back is going to be 13 hours, so I definitely will need some entertainment. I am definitely going to be bringing my iPad so that I can read books, surf, etc, on the plane and train on the way out. But the iPad, I think I heard, won't work as an iPod with the 430N right?

My iPod is a 5th gen Classic -- I've got about 50 GB of music on it -- more than will fit on the HDD of the radio. If I pared that down, how long would it take to copy 20 GB from the stick to the HDD? Am I better off just bringing the iPod and hoping that security at the airport doesn't freak out and give me a cavity search looking for the earbuds?

Re: ipad + 430n?

It's probably easier to just take the iPod. The USB transfer will only take a half hour to an hour or so, but the file system on these things is a bit kludgy- playlists are determined by folder, so you just upload folders full of the songs you want in that playlist. If you want a song in more than one playlist, you need to have them in there multiple times- once in each playlist folder.

It works, but it isn't exactly how I'd have done it (makes me wonder what they were smoking). The iPod and a USB to iPod cable should be pretty much all you need.

Keep in mind, though, you'll have the year of free satellite radio going, so you can enjoy that on the trip as well.

Yes, the top shelf of the stoage cubby in the armresh has a USB port in the back. Plug in the ipod and you have full search controls from the touch screen. Works very well imo

Re: ipad + 430n?

I tried connecting my iPad to my 430N via cable and got an error. I didn't try Bluetooth streaming.
