Not sure if this is the right thread for these questions, but I am interested.

Yea the alpine sub didn't do anything for me either, didn't even feel like it was on. My plans were to add a amp with LC7i for door speakers, but after I changed the front and rear speakers with the Focals. And added a small 10" sub with mono amp. I'm not as motived to spend another $600-700 for 4 channel amp and LC7i for the door speakers. Still might do the upgrade in a few months but I'll tell you it sounds very good as is and almost is good enough for me. Very happy with the sound just changing the speakers and adding a sub.
I recommend doing it in stages so you can see the change and stop upgrade when u feel satisfied.
Like I said, I'm very happy with how it sounds now and the only real reason I would do the amp and DSP is because I want to move more sound when tailgating. But while in truck, sound is clean and clear and goes loud enough.

Re: is the 9 speaker upgrade option worth it?

Thanks GrandAltitude, that's very encouraging to hear. I'm now leaning towards replacing the front components to start.

And dynamatting the stock sub enclosure, based on antsjeep's recommendation. I don't need a lot of sub, just something.

Yes it does help. I actually fade three clicks to the back and find the sound stage is still forward enough for my liking. It must be rocking in the back seat at higher volumes, but I typically don't have anyone there.

Exactly what I do.

I think it would be worth the upgrade. It's a very decent mid level sound system. Not amazing, but it is what it is and it's worth it IMO.

Re: is the 9 speaker upgrade option worth it?

What I find with the alpine system is that it really depends on the source you are listening to.

Media you load on a stick/sd that is HQ sounds amazing. also Pandora streaming sounds REALLY good.

Sirius sounds like trash, HD radio sounds pretty good, FM/AM sound bad.

So the alpine system is worth it to me if you stream pandora or have high quality mp3's. But it sounds totally different depending on the source. Try it you won't believe the difference. I'm dumbfounded as to why sirius sounds so bad through it. I think when my sirius subscription is up i'm going to sign up for the paid pandora subscription because of how much better it sounds.

^^Very true. Serious definitely sounds like trash. The only vehicle I've heard it sound worse in is Ford's Sony systems.

Re: is the 9 speaker upgrade option worth it?

Greetings,

The system was never designed not be a high end unit, even through they mark it as Premium. As early reviews going back to the end of 2010 were coming out saying it was below average. This was designed for the general public plain and simple. This what FCA wanted and that what they are serving to the general public. I brought my JGC knowing that I will gutting the Alpine and I did.

This system works depending on your level of sound appreciation. So it is worth it? It is up to you the individual if this meets your satisfaction.

Best for now.

Re: is the 9 speaker upgrade option worth it?

We can't blame the Alpine system or uConnect for how bad Sirius sounds. If you google "Sirius XM sound quality" its all about how terrible it sounds in pretty much every vehicle out there.

I agree that the Alpine system sounds good with quality source material. I use an iPod through USB, playing Apple Lossless and HQ Mp3s, like skunkd mentioned. What I like about the iPod is I get all the sorting functions, including playlists, from the iPod on the uConnect screen, and album art works on everything, if you have it on the iPod.

That being said, I am considering upgrading some of the Alpine speakers, keeping the Alpine amp/dsp. I still stand by my statement that the Alpine is well worth the upgrade cost. It's a good step up from the base system and may be all you ever need. If you decide to upgrade, you have all the speaker locations for surround sound and you can move up in small steps. A lot of people on the forum seem to be having success with that approach.

Re: is the 9 speaker upgrade option worth it?

Greetings,

Yes, the source is a critical instrument in the overall quality of the sound. The DSP, amp and the speakers can only do so much to help improve the sound. Unless you have an aftermarket DSP that you can help fine tune that source. It all boils down to the quality of the headunit as the starting place.

In the early years of the WK2, when you could get an aftermarket HU, that was thing to do and some speaker upgrades. For many, it solved the problem. I know that the 2015 HU is improved which helps a lot.

IMHO, their is no way that the Alpine system is really a true 7.1 Surround Sound Premium System. And it not even Alpine's fault.

Staying on topic with the OP's question, the many different post within this thread indicate it is a matter of personal opinion. Demo it, it is the only way you are going to get an answer.

Best for now.

Re: is the 9 speaker upgrade option worth it?

Sirius is highly compressed and in general isn't going to sound as good as locally sourced media or much of the streamed sources like Pandora. Nature of the beast. To the topic at hand, yes, IMHO, the Alpine setup is a good choice for "most folks". Yes, it's not going to satisfy hard core audiophiles, but it's still pretty darn good in the relatively quiet JGC interior. The HK is better, but it's not available in all trim levels.
