Media you load on a stick/sd that is HQ sounds amazing. also Pandora streaming sounds REALLY good.

Sirius sounds like trash, HD radio sounds pretty good, FM/AM sound bad.

So the alpine system is worth it to me if you stream pandora or have high quality mp3's. But it sounds totally different depending on the source. Try it you won't believe the difference. I'm dumbfounded as to why sirius sounds so bad through it. I think when my sirius subscription is up i'm going to sign up for the paid pandora subscription because of how much better it sounds.
I never listen to satellite or radio.
I load MP3s (5GB worth) onto my hard drive (430N) and only listen to them. Most of my MP3s are VBR or CBR @ 320kbps.

I also use software to adjust the gain on the songs so that they are all pretty much around the same volume (instead of some being much louder than the rest).

Just wish the damn radio would show album art. I've gone through all of my songs and ensured that they had album art and it would be nice to be able to view it....

I have the same problem with MP3 album art not showing up on USB sticks or SD cards on my 8.4A/RA3. As soon as I switched to an iPod on USB, album art shows up on everything. Not sure if that's an option for you. I'm using an eight year old iPod touch with 8 GB and it works fine.

I agree that the Alpine system sounds good with quality source material. I use an iPod through USB, playing Apple Lossless and HQ Mp3s, like skunkd mentioned. What I like about the iPod is I get all the sorting functions, including playlists, from the iPod on the uConnect screen, and album art works on everything, if you have it on the iPod.

That being said, I am considering upgrading some of the Alpine speakers, keeping the Alpine amp/dsp. I still stand by my statement that the Alpine is well worth the upgrade cost. It's a good step up from the base system and may be all you ever need. If you decide to upgrade, you have all the speaker locations for surround sound and you can move up in small steps. A lot of people on the forum seem to be having success with that approach.

You are correct and the source is certainly important. That said, actually I get very good quality SXM sound from the HK 19 speaker system in my Summit. I have no experience with the Alpine system. On the other hand, my wife's E class Benz with SXM does not sound nearly as good as the Summit.
