JBL ms-8 Install

Good morning and merry Xmas to my fellow members.

Hopefully someone can help me,
I've researched and searched everywhere but have not found a definitive answer and before I contact jbl I was hoping maybe someone on this forum has experience with the MS-8.

I currently own a '14 JGC w/ 6 speaker set and no sub.
i'm currently in the process of replacing everything in the truck.

I will be using the JBL MS-8 as my DSP.

My question w/ the ms-8 is it 1 input=1output?

I've read the owners/installation manual on the ms-8 and it states to connect FR/FL inputs = 2inputs, RR/RL inputs which = another 2, I get that so far, but for a sub input, I don't have one.

What must I do to obtain an output for my sub?

I kno the audio control lcq-1 implements a "Auto Mode Circuit" but am not sure if the MS-8 has something similar.

I do have 2 remaining tweeter inputs which I don't plan on using them, but I don't remember if the Tweeters were Full-Range.

Like I said I've searched everywhere but all the information that I have found included the 9 speaker w/ sub sound systems and of course had the sub input.

I apologize if this topic had been previously discussed but I did not see an answer in any of the threads.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful holiday and god bless to all.

Re: JBL ms-8 Install

Season Greetings,

With the MS-8 you have 2 options of bringing in the 2 channels you need to work with it. The 1st, the MS-8 will be able to the summing and 2nd, which I prefer better is to sum with an external device to get the full range signal, giving the MS-8's processor less too do.

Once you have an instructed the MS-8 in the input stage, your free to anything you want. The MS-8 for some reason likes channel 8 as the output for the sub.

So, if want to keep your 6 channel setup and the sub to get the most of the LOGIC will be this example:

Channel 1&2 = Front mid/bass midrange driver
Channel 3&4 = Front hi's
Channel 5&6 = Rear door coaxial setup or components with a passive crossover
Channel 8 = The sub

I would not use the passive crossover for the fronts, instead use the power of the MS-8 electronic crossover take over. If you wish to add a center channel and modify the dash, then Channel 7 will be the center.

Just remember, every time you make an adjustment, you have input everything over again. If you just want to do a auto eq again, then you do not have to redo the input settings.

Best for now.

Re: JBL ms-8 Install

Hey thanks for the info. You don't know how bad my head was hurting trying to blueprint the schematics out in my brain....

So w/ the MS-8 all you really need is a 2 channel input.
2 channel in and 8 out through configuration.

Is the a specific input to use?

Again thank you.

Season Greetings,

Just use channel 1 & 2 for the inputs.

In terms of summing, it is a matter of opinion to use the internal or go with the external. It depends upon the speakers and amps you select. If you are going with hi quality in terms of entry level audiophile or above, then I prefer the external route of getting the best signal going into the MS-8.

What are your plans for speakers and amp?

Your welcome and enjoy the season.

Best for now.

Re: JBL ms-8 Install

going all jl audio. Ive had great experiences in the past with Jl and their customer support. I also found great prices for the equipment.

2x jl audio c3-650s convertibles
jl audio hd900/5
1x jl audio 10W7AE

Going to Dynamite each door and upgrade battery and maybe the alternator depending on the schematics of the alternator.

Re: JBL ms-8 Install

Season Greetings,

If you are going with the C3-650 and using the MS-8, then I would suggest going with the following:

Front Door: C3-650 without the crossover

Car Audio - Evolution® - C3 - Individual Components / Crossovers

Rear door: C3-650 in a coaxial setup with crossover

Keep the Sub as you plan.

For amps:

JL Audio HD 750/1 for the sub

JL Audio XD 600/6 v2 for the C3 Speakers

Your MS-8 output configuration will be as follows:

Channel 1 Front L mid: into channel 1 of the 600/6v2
Channel 2 Front R mid: into channel 2 of the 600/6v2
Channel 3 Front L hi: into channel 3 of the 600/6v2
Channel 4 Front R hi: into channel 4 of the 600/6v2
Channel 5 Rear Left: into channel 5 of the 600/6v2
Channel 6 Rear Right: into channel 6 of the 600/6v2
Channel 7: not used
Channel 8 mono sub: Input of the HD 750/1

All amps set to full range and sum according to the previous posts.
Since these are both Class D amps the alternator is fine. I always suggest get a cap or reserved battery. You check mine out by clicking the link on my signature page.

Once the speakers break-in you will have to play with MS-8 to fine tune your settings.

Best for now.
