So I have found a pair of JL Audio C2-690TX speakers for a good price and was wondering if anyone else had opinions on them. I have the 9 speaker system and would like to use them for the front speakers. On Crutchfield it says they do not fit but I am unsure of why. They appear to be less than the max depth. The specs on them are listed below.
Jl Audio C2-690tx 6x9-Inch 3 Way Speakers with Silk Dome Tweeters
Continuous Power Handling (RMS) 70 W
Peak Music Power 225 W
Recommended Amplifier Power (RMS) 15 - 125 W / Ch.
System Efficiency 93 dB @ 1 W / 1 m
System Nominal Impedance 4 Ω
System Frequency Response 53 Hz - 22 KHz ± 3 dB
I bought and then returned them. Opted for the JL Audio C2-650X Evolution instead to better match the footprint of the factories. Did same in rear door panels as well.
Sound great very happy with the upgrades.
With the C2-690tx, I would recommend getting a speaker in a 2-way component set for the front door. This way you will have better imagery with the sound. This is extremely important if you have the Alpine 9 speaker setup as you do.
Why a 2 way speaker over a 3 way?
Also, I have been looking at another set that look to be good on paper and I am leaning towards vs the C2-690tx with their matching 6.5 inch counterparts. I have listed them with their specs below.
JBL GTO629
Audio Specifications
Sensitivity (2.83V/1m) 93dB
Frequency Response 53Hz-21kHz
Power Handling (Peak) 180W
Nominal Impedance 3 ohms
Power Handling (RMS) 5W-125W
The Alpine system is designed as an active crossover network. Which means in this case, everything is pre-set for the front doors as 2 way speaker with the 6x9 and tweeter on there own crossover settings, eq and time delay. With the JL Audio 6x9 (triaxial speaker), it is designed to be hooked up into one speaker channel per side, thus the Alpine DSP/Amp will not be sending the right information for it to play correctly. You will find it mismatched to the other speakers.
The JBL, same thing. Even through it is a 2-way, this type of coaxial speaker shares the same location and the dsp functions. This type of speaker will work fine in the rear door since the Alpine is designed for that way.
Using Crutchfield as source, here is the link for the component speaker for the front door:
Since this is going to be a straight swap, you do not need to install the passive crossover given in the package. You can go with either a 6x9 or 6.5 inch speaker with an adapter plate.
If you were super cool, you would put horns on the dash instead of tweeters. jk.
I've installed two sets (don't ask me why, the dude loved tweeters) of Rockford Fosgate Prime R1T-S and was happy with the way they sounded.
Memphis SR1 are just what they cost...cheap...PRX1 are much nicer (at a higher price of course) and come with crossovers, however, since Alpine already does the crossover, you might miss a couple notes on the lower side if they get filtered out.
