Re: Jl audio Fiberglass sub box build

Thanks moose! Thanks for the rep. I enjoy "playing" with fiberglass.
Durt i wouldnt call it separate compartments but its like 80% (or with a 2 inch gap at the bottom or back i not sure yet. I was gonna mount my amps under the back or front left seat.

Re: Jl audio Fiberglass sub box build

I tried to play with glass a few times and it was ok but I never got good at it. Love the pictorial on this build.

You asked for opinions and I have two thoughts about how your current set up looks like it may end up.
- with the rings higher than the back panel of the enclosure its going to add a nice look to the top of the enclosure. It'll look awesome once smoothed and painted or covered.
- that same design will look a bit odd from a side view at the point where the material wraps from the sub rings up and back... unless you have a plan for that.

now that I write thee are more thoughts...
- Will the rings being higher than the back effect how the cargo cover rolls over them?
- Can you build a separation panel between the two subs? As long as I can remember there has been debate on this subject and I have always been of the mindset that separate enclosures are better than one giant enclosure for a couple reasons...
1 - It'll help stiffen up the long back and bottom panel as well as any flex the glassed parts will have. A Stiff box is always a good thing when talking about sub boxes
2 - One sub wont interfere with the movement of the other. Yes, they are supposed to move together but when sharing air space if one moves faster than teh other there begins an overlap in the push/pull at the end/beginning of the movement cycle. I always thought this was an issue in some enclosures I built years ago when I was much younger.

Looking forward to more pics soon!

you can really see the fit in the second picture.

thank you zmilin for the post. you are exactly right on both opinions. on your first one, yes that is exactly what i was shooting for. IMO it will give it a nice finish with the sub rings being higher than the back on the box.
On the second one- i have been studying that problem since my initial design. i believe i have fabricated a solution to that problem. first i cut a templete from cardboard to match the curve of the fender on the inside. then i went and cut my 3/4 MDF to match my templete. and it actually looks way better than i had thought in my head. till you actually build it, its really hard to picture what it will look like in your head. i personally dont use the cargo cover so i have not investigated that yet. also i will not be able to descide on the separate enclosures untill i cover it with fleece. Because im not sure exactly where the fleece will sit and how high to cut the board. ill prob do that after i lay the first layer of glass.

time to start laying glass. YAY!!

***the pictures do not do justice to the box. some of the lines and curves do not show up like they do in person.****

front of fleeced box.jpg (ok the box is ready for the next stage of the process. its ready for its first layer of glass.)

right side of fleeced box.jpg

left side of fleeced box.jpg

top of fleeced box.jpg (this is a picture of the top so yall could get an idea of what it looks like)

it sits very nicely in the car and actually turned out better than i had hoped. i am actually thinking about painting it instead of carpet, but im still debating that.
i had to cut the box 2-3 inches short on each side in order to be able to take the box in and out. its still a bit tricky but once you figure it out, its a piece of cake. but all in all it looks great. i cant wait till i can get some sound hooked up to it.

Re: Jl audio Fiberglass sub box build

Just ordered my fiberglass supplies which will be here friday, so I can plan on laying glass ALL weekend. only cost me $140. plus the cost of the wood and fleece, im about $180 into this project which isnt bad. good news is I shouldn't need any more. I bought more than i needed so I wouldn't have to order more. If I would have paid the local audio shop to do all this for me I would be out like $600.
i am leaning more to painting it instead of doing carpet. i have been researching both and with the curves of my box and my lack of carpeting knowledge, i may just prep it for paint and take it to a body shop and get them to paint it the same color as the jeep, BLACK.

Re: Jl audio Fiberglass sub box build

When i opened the box the top on the gallon jug had come open and got all over all the fiberglass i ordered. Bout 2-3 inches had spilled out. i called the company and asked for them to send me a quart to replace the amount loss. They said they would just send me out another gallon today free. That shit is like $50 per gallon. Thank you very much, i appreciate it.

Very cool project, never done fiberglass stuff but I've always been curious on how it's done. Maybe you can build interested folks a cheaper version of the stealthbox

you are actually the second person to ask me that. i would def consider it. how much is the stealth box running now? as long as its going in a jeep i can make a mold or use the one i already made.
