Looking for opinions on 3.5" center

Searching through the threads I have surprisingly seen quite a few folks who have opted to upgrade the 3.5" center vs removing it all together. Most of the aftermarket 3.5" I have come across are in pairs and relatively inexpensive (<$75). I haven't come across a Helix or Focal 3.5" (although Helix makes 4"), telling me that, either this is a new fade for car audio or not necessary for quality sound.

As it is (9 speaker upgraded 509 watt amp) the center speaker draws my ears and far overpowers the door highs which is not my personal preference.

Basically, is it just individual listening preference, or is it more power through the added speaker, and is there a compelling quality issue that is marred by removing these?

Re: Looking for opinions on 3.5" center

Greetings,

The factory surround sound system that you have was never done correctly, although many here will say it has. Based upon your personal experience, you are in the camp of those who hate it along with me. A correctly done surround system is a beautiful sound to experience.

The pros and cons of changing the center speaker; a better speaker will sound better as many here have done my upgrading to the Polk. The con, it will still be overpowering and not to your personal preference.

You might be able to find a Polk here in the forum as many have upgraded and have the extra one. Or you can try any of these to web sites that I always recommend. Look for a full range wide band 3 - 3.5 speaker. This does not give you to much tweeter sounds. Let the tweeters in the door do the tweeting.

https://www.parts-express.com

https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com

Both of these companies have excellent customer service.

Best for now.

Re: Looking for opinions on 3.5" center

put a kicker KS series 3.5 in there. wont cost anywhere near a focal, and is a world of sound quality difference. Dont disconnect the center and leave it empty, it will sound horrible, and clearly tell something is missing, as well as most of your BT phone comes from the center speaker.

Re: Looking for opinions on 3.5" center

I still have a single Polk DB351 3-1/2" speaker left over from when I replaced my center one - anyone interested in buying it feel free to PM me; I'll make you a deal.

Re: Looking for opinions on 3.5" center

Look for a 3.5" with a low sensitivity. I took my Polk out after a few weeks, as it was drowning out the rest of my interior speakers. It was to much for my taste.

The only other option would be to install an inline resistor (fixed output) or L-Pad (variable output) wired in series to pad down the output of the speaker. I may actually try a resistor on the Polk to see what happens. They only cost about $4 so its worth a try. The only downside to a resistor is that your output will be fixed (based on the value of the resistor you install) For example: you could half the output using a specific sized resistor. Whereas an L-Pad (volume knob) would give you the ability to raise or lower the output to your liking.

Those are two options i read about online and seem to give us any hope of adjusting the damn center channel.

Re: Looking for opinions on 3.5" center

I did a full front stage swap and used a HAT Legatia LS3SE for my center. Like already mentioned above I would only suggest using a speaker of this caliber if you are doing a full system.

Best for now.

I went with the Focal Flax 6.5" components. I don't have my hook-up with HAT anymore, unfortunately.
