Map Update Process!!

I just got a map update for my 2011 Jeep. The instructions include leaving the engine running for two hours in your driveway. Is this really the only way?

That sounds crazy.

Personally I'd use a battery charger while the new map was downloading instead of running the engine.

The main fear here is the computer "bricking" if a loss of power occurs while downloading.

Re: Map Update Process!!

A $50 Battery Tender is a great investment and can help the battery last much longer than those without one.

Re: Map Update Process!!

The update was $149, but after shipping and tax, $162. A little clarification on the engine running issue. If you have the ignition on only, it times out in about 15 minutes. That is why Garmin wants you to run the engine.

Re: Map Update Process!!

Please let us know how long it actually takes to install the update. That's just crazy, idling in the driveway for two hours!

Re: Map Update Process!!

Hopefully our's will transfer a lot faster. They will have to be either USB or SD.

Re: Map Update Process!!

When I update my stand-alone Garmin NUVI it takes about 15 minutes, and that's the entire US map set. Does the 2 hrs include download time or is it just for the update? I have never done an update as the GC is new, and from what I've seen for the cost and time, might never.

The '14s don't have DVD or even standard CD drives. They will have to use a media that will work. I think BMW maps come on DVD or USB for an additional charge.

Just remember, our fellow GC family members with a '11-13 don't have the SD/ USB input like Bill was saying, so it may take 2 hours of idling to update.

For us with a '14+ it should be faster, but I'm sure Jeep will charge a "convenience" fee

Re: Map Update Process!!

I think you can keep it awake by cycling through acc, run, off every 10 minutes or so.
Just set a timer.

The radio does not shut down immediately when you cycle it.
I've done this to get my music database rebuilt because I have about 8000 songs on a 64GB stick and it takes quite a while.

You won't kill the battery on ACC in 2 hours. If battery is any good.
Make sure headlights are off.

A charger won't stop car from wanting to sleep.

Having any charger on the battery while connected is VERY risky these days with all the electronics. I always disconnect battery if I need to charge it.
