You are 100% correct and this is the dumbest recomomendation I've seen.

Also when I stumble into tunes I like on YouTube I try to find the find the best distribution media I can find, usually a CD and rip to flac. Then I convert to the highest bitrate MP3 for the truck.

To save some money I quite often find used CDs on Amazon and ebay.

But if you can only find something on YouTube then going to wav does nothing other than waste space and lacks embedded meta data.

All I can tell you if you listen to a song on XM radio and then listen to the same song that I re-equalized using this simple program by increasing volume output and a bump in lows 40-100 hz range the difference is dramatic. As far as a wav verse mp3 you couldn't probably even tell the difference anyway.

But what do I know about sound quality I'm just a dumb professional musician (bass player) who has made a living playing music for the past 37 years.....

My Alpine system ROCKS Here's why!!

Aren't there three systems? The stock. Is that by alpine, too? The Alpine upgrade system on the Overland. And the HK.

In any case the upgrade Alpine problem is that the speakers are inefficient. Such that they need a lot of power to actually start sounding nice. At low volume they suck. At louder volume they start to sound nice with the amp now starting to move them.

As for MP3 versus WAV, I can tell the difference. You know where the clipping occurs especially in the lows. It's not as evident in low end speakers but if you really have good ears you should be able to detect.

At home I listen exclusively on studio monitors down to studio monitor subwoofers that are calibrated to the environment and you can discern the quality from the type of source.

With that said, XM shouldn't even exist except for traffic data. It makes everything else sound good including my non singing voice.

Nice tutorial!!

I mainly use FLAC, but I have some mp3's that I would like to "spruce" up.

Re: My Alpine system ROCKS Here's why!!

Greetings,

Maybe, if FCA opens their ears a little, they would change out the current FCA SirusXM tuner for the same quality of the current aftermarket tuner, the SXV300V1. This would make a major difference. In my previous Pathfinder way back when, I had the latest aftermarket SirusXM and my aftermarket radio had a BBE processor built-in to re-equialize source input. With the BBE off, is was very good and with BBE on, it made a major difference. Simply put with JGC, it is bad and a disgrace with the Uconnect headunit. I am sure if Alpine had their way with FCA, they would have put on their re-equializing software into the DSP. That would have help dealing with both the tuner and HU>

That being said, for the same money I paid with all the SirusXM subscription service, I pay the same for all the steaming premium services and have a far superior sound. The superior sound is a beauty to listen to on my studio quality system that i built for my JGC.

And the debate continues......

Best for now.

No doubt. But in my experience, almost any format of digital audio served from your phone or SSD will sound better than XM...

Many of us are life-long musicians, so we do appreciate your goal!

There was a time when there was a lot of talk about the HK system, yet there was no radio above the RA4, which was the same as the RA3 except for navigation implementation.

As I started looking a few months back preparing to order a MY17 I realized that all the information, including the now available window stickers, refer to 19 HK speakers. I did see one reference to an amplifier. I have come to believe that their is no HK radio/head unit in the Jeeps.

Anyone see anything different coming out of Chrysler?

BTW - to me, the Alpine in my '14 Overland sounded as good as the Alpine in my '11 MDX. The only exception was the 3d (I think that's what it was called) mode in the Acura. Of course all I had that took advantage of it was the sample disk with 12 songs on it.

Re: My Alpine system ROCKS Here's why!!

IMHO the first thing any audio after market shop will do to better the sound quality is add a power amp. The next step is to change out speakers. This is the real challenge, all speakers have there own characteristics. What are the best sounding speakers for the JC? This can be trial and error not to mention expensive!

Re: My Alpine system ROCKS Here's why!!

Even with all those speaker options it will actually depend on the end user and their ears and listening tastes.

I beleive you are correct that it's the same head unit and just different amps and speakers for the HK setup. But Im a little confused where active noise cancelation is done and I assume that "processing" is done by HK. But I think it's in the head unit.

Actually most owners and shops would start with the speakers.
Most bang for the buck.
